I was watching some videos about famous academy award upsets and found one on the 1955 Oscar race between Judy for the first remake of  A Star Is Born and how she lost best actress to Grace Kelly. I think it gives good insight into how Hollywood and the Academy works :classy:

The year that Shakespeare In Love won both female acting categories was by far the worst year :diane:

Dial M for Murder and Rear Window are 2 of the greatest films ever so the fact she had them released in the same year and then finished off the year with country girl I think she was just as deserving for the Oscar

We'll be ecstatic for Miss Close if that happens, but let's be optimistic for now :vegas:

To be fair, Dame Judi Dench tho - one of the best actors our planet has ever had, a consummate professional, and truly unforgettable in that role.

I don't know how you watch Judy in this film and then decline to give her an Oscar. Her finest performance ever.

But that's Hollywood politics for ya. And that's why these awards are won and lost by studio PR perfectly (or imperfectly) executed over the course of 6 months, not by whether a film or performance is good or worthy.

 there was Audrey Hepburn and Jane Wyman too that year so it was a tight race. Besides if youbsee the movie yourself you will understand why she did not win. All Iearned is that y'all gotta see On The Waterfront cos that film win big that year :diane:

Part of me really wants to watch the previous versions of A Star Is Born, but I also don't because I don't want to spoil it for myself. I feel like in some ways I already have :( This is an interesting video btw

Two reasons.

The studio system was still in power.

MGM had a shitload of votes. They steered them all to Kelly. The Golden Girl with a seven year contract.

On top of it  plain and simple  Judy had been ...well... difficult... again ...on the set and the film didn’t make the money they thought it would  .....so Warner’s just shrugged and let it go.

Warner’s had no further interest in the film or Garland .

In her defense, Kelly shows really wonderful wonderful range in the country girl… However Judy had been making millions and delivering incredible performances for almost 18 years at that point ......

..she deserved it

I don't think I'll be mad if Glenn Close snatches the Oscar, honestly. She's a legendary actress with many nominations but zero statuettes.

fans already preparing excuses in case Gaga doesn't win, I see.... mind you, the haters will be using the exact same tactics and examples from the past to discredit Gaga's nomination.... "the Academy is unfair", "it's all PR, "she bought it" etc
