On the red carpet Gaga was selling and communicating "I'm a classical movie star who belongs on the red carpet of a film festival" that's not what she is trying to communicate with this cover. She is communicating "I'm not just this avant-garde pop star I can pull off this 'no-makeup', stripped back character. I can embody this character, I can pull off ASIB". I also appreciate a diversity of her 'Vogue' covers that captures and archives her style and fashion transformations throughout her career. Maybe you dislike it now, but when we look back in 20 years we will see an artist who has transformed musically and visually throughout their career not just a one note artist. She brought veils and feathers to the red carpet and this is a raw, plain photoshoot. It keeps a contrast that will build a hype around her.
