Well some people are saying Gaga's acting is only so-so, so I don't want to get my hopes too high in this category...

She lost 6 times, and one of them is by Cher. So anything is possible. I mean, she can always get her moments finally..., or not. Glenn is not the only contender here.

Regina George

If Cher managed to beat Glenn Close (for one of her best acting gigs in “Fatal Attraction” and Meryl Streep in the same category back in 1988 - Then Gaga can do it too. :staymad:

Gaga would be crucified if she won BA I think.  She’d probably have to escape to a desert island with her millions in one hand, her records clutched in the other and her Oscar somewhere special.

Absolutely. "The Wife" will be stale by the time awards season is in full effect. I don't know if Glenn Close's performance is good enough to make her movie less boring. The actress we should've been most concerned about is Olivia Colman, but it is rumoured she's going to be pushed in the best supporting actress category to increase her chances.

L. Gaga's main competition now is Nicole Kidman, Viola Davis, and Kiki Lane. We'll have to wait to see how well their movies fare at the box office and with critics.

Glenn Close has been getting "career best" reviews, and she has Sony Pictures Classics backing her. The early release would not work against her because it was part of SPC's campaign strategy. And sometimes it really doesn't matter how boring or stale a movie is - like how Julianne Moore finally won her long overdue Oscar for basically a Lifetime movie.

This is the oscars. The show where Gwyneth Paltrow apparently gave a better performance in "Shakespeare in Love" than Cate Blanchett in "Elizabeth".

A film's relevance and campaigning has always been a major factor.

Lifetime movie? Still Alice currently has a better RT score than The Wife. Why would SPC purposefully campaign by having their film debut at major festivals a year before it's going to be released and contending? There was no strategy in that. Much of the buzz is focused around Viola Davis, Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman, Kiki Layne. Glenn Close may still be on prediction lists but I find it hard to believe she's not going to drop off as we still have 5/6 months to go.
