Gaga already has a lot of competitors for Best Actress. Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Saoirse Ronan, Olivia Colman, Melissa McCarthy, Nicole Kidman, and Natalie is an established actress I just hope she qualifies next year.

Yes, she has competition (though *at the moment* she is a frontrunner for a nomination at least). It remains to be seen whether a) "Vox Lux" will even be released this year and b) "Vox Lux" and/or Natalie will even be competition since the film's reception has been mixed overall. Natalie's performance is generally well-liked, but the movie itself has proved alienating and messy to many critics, she could miss out on a nomination. And no one is talking about the music from "Vox Lux," so it really doesn't seem likely it will be competition in Original Song. But who knows!

And interestingly, I have heard a lot of talk about some of the competition being run in Supporting Actress, not Lead. Including Natalie Portman, who is really only in the second half of the "Vox Lux." Also Olivia Colema, because she is one of three leads. I've even seen some arguments for running Glenn in supporting if she stands a better chance there.

That's interesting. But isn't Glenn portrayed as a lead actress in The Wife? Anyway she's the frontrunner for most predictions, I'm sure they would submit her under Best Actress instead of Best Supporting Actress. I think only long shots will be relegated to supporting categories.

I just hope Vox Lux is not released this year. And hoping Olivia Colman will be submitted under supporting actress instead.

Glenn is a lead actress, yes, but there's this whole element of "category fraud" which basically boils down to studios fudging the rules a bit in order to get the nominations and wins they think they have the best shot at. (Another example is how, like, they used to submit Orange Is the New Black to the Emmys as a comedy, even though it is arguably way more of a drama; but Netflix thought it has a better shot in a less crowded comedy category.)

I think they will run Glenn in Lead, but I've seen a few people float the Supporting idea because they think they can fudge it enough. The thing is that Supporting Actress is almost more crowded this year than Lead, so it doesn't even seem like a smart play.

And most people I follow think Olivia Coleman is a LOCK if they run her Supporting, so she almost definitely will.

Yeah I know what category fraud is, but usually only ambiguous roles (those which are between the borders of lead and supporting) get the category fraud 'treatment'. I thought Glenn's role was clear enough that it was intended to be a lead.

Also if you are the front runner of a lead category in most predictions, I don't see the necessity to relegate it to a supporting category. Only those which are unsure of getting a nomination (those placed at #4 or #5 in prediction lists) will need to consider submitting their roles under Supporting instead.

I hope Olivia goes for Supporting Actress instead though. But we aren't sure what their studios will do.

Again, I think they will almost certainly run her Lead, and she is basically a LOCK for a nomination. I think the worry is not "Will she be nominated?" but "Will she WIN?" because there is this narrative that she is both overdue and it could be her last chance. If they felt like they stood a better chance in Supporting and could make the argument for it, they might do it. The thing with "The Wife" is that apparently the movie is not great, and Glenn is the only worthwhile thing about it. If that narrative continues, it could hurt her chances, which might make them want to game the system a bit.

But I don't think they will run her Supporting. It's just kind of interesting to hear the whispers and get a peek at the machinations of this whole thing.

Some people are saying Glenn gave a career-best performance, which I think is hard for Gaga to top, based on the teasers and trailers I have seen. Also The Wife didn't receive that bad, it has an 86% score on RT and 77 on Metacritic, which is good enough for a movie to be considered good.

I need to watch A Star Is Born in full before I can tell if Gaga is winning material.
