Metacritic Scores for ASIB Don't Matter

The rotten tomato score does. The average moviegoer only really checks rotten tomatoes or imdb for a film's score, and they tend to be the scores listed in ads and on dvds/blurays etc.

not they go to wikipedia where both the rotten tomatoes and metacritic scores are given, if there's 'universal acclaim' they'll go watch it.

Maybe, but MC counts way less reviews and is way less reliable. Rottentomatoes could be 78 and MC could be 61.

Have you ever seen Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB scores on ads? I sure haven't...

The average viewer doesn't even see either of those though. That's just for film freaks etc. (I use MC religiously btw so no judgment).

All of those scores are instructive to get a picture of how the critics and the public are receiving it. To measure responses I'd suggest to check out all three, the truth, realistically, is in the middle.

All the time actually. Trailers will ABSOLUTELY advertise a good RT score, blu rays do it as well. A good RT score is great marketing.

I absolutely have, and "certified fresh" films get marketed that way. It's 2018, and people check rotten tomatoes. If MC only counts 25 reviews and RT counts 121 reviews it's clear which one we should be paying attention to.

That must be a national thing then, in which case I semi-backtrack. While I agree that's good marketing, stellar reviews from major publications (the ones MC highlights) are also effective and also appear in trailers (and not for dvd's etc., but actual theatrical trailers), so it's still weird for me to believe that a user score of RT or IMDB could make a real difference.

Not necessarily. The selection procedure for publications is just different.

I think many people favor RT because they disguise their real scores with the famous percentages, which literally have no value. I've seen films of 90+% that nevertheless score around 7.0 in average grading. Those percentages always create the impression that your favorite product is doing great while it's actually doing very mediocre.

The fact remains that none of those scores matter. Haven't we seen tons of incredibly well received products that end up failing anyway? And vice versa? At the end of the day it's more important for the film studio to spend millions on marketing, regardless of how a product is received. Generating interest is not about quality alone.

Honestly word of mouth and marketing are much bigger factors than any one review aggregate site. RT and MC do help indicate what the critical and public response are to something, and people will check the sites, but a bad aggregate score isn’t gonna sink the film if it’s marketed well toward the correct audience.
