With 1/4 of the population aged 65 and over and still low immigration rates Japan faced a drop of 372,000 of their Native population the biggest drop ever.

Immigration of 145,000 foreigners partially offset the decline

The net loss is still well over 200,000 in a single year

They work so much they dont have time for dating let alone starting a family. They seriously need to do something about their work culture. It already starts in school when kids barely have any time for anything else.

It’s a Japanese custom to see any kind of work through until the very end, no matter the outcome.

LOVE JUNKIE

I'm not sure why people see this as such a negative thing. Overpopulation has been a problem in Japan, specifically Tokyo

Yes in a ecological way it's better but economically speaking it will cripple them if their population keeps dwindling and they wont be able to compete on a global scale anymore. That's why there is concern but on a real level I find nothing wrong with it it lol. I kind of wish the world population slowly shifts organically like this because overpopulation is truly becoming a big issue.

In my experience Japanese grammar isn't difficult. The most difficult thing is writing it.

Yes ecologically it's good but economically this tends to lead to deflation (which they've dealt with since 2000 despite keeping interest rates at 0% and printing money via Quantitative Easing)

It also puts an enormous pressure on their healthcare, social assistance programs and retirement funds because too many people are old and receiving and not working and too few are being productive

Japan has the highest debt burden in the world (worse than Greece) at over 200% of GDP meaning they owe over twice their entire Nations annual economic output

So far they have a avoided a financial meltdown because their on and off deflation and falling consumption results in bonds being favoured as investments over more productive assets like stocks. This has given Japan unusually low borrowing costs. Also most of the debt is held domestically by Japanese institutions and individuals meaning when the Government pays the matured bonds it's money going back into their economy not out of it

Still tho, it's a serious issue and low rates won't save them forever.

They need more immigrants to slow the decline. Overpopulation doesn't have to get fixed with such a rapid collapse. Also they need to raise their retirement age to have more people paying taxes and deducting to the system because with such old demographics they have no choice. Some Countries with younger demographics than Japan like Germany, Portugal and UK if I'm not mistaken for example already started making reforms for longer life spans, lower birth rates and aging population.

That's what happens when you live to work instead of work to live, you don't have time to meet friends, know someone with whom create a family

If they had a higher female labor force participation rate maybe their men wouldn't have to work so much

It's ironic. This technologically advanced and modern culture in so many ways is also so old fashioned in others

I wrecken their high proportion of old people has maintained a certain level of conservatism in the culture as a whole

An usually high percentage (by developed world standards) of their population is also still against LGBT

And where do you get this conclusion from? :oprah:

Do you understand how complex Japanese societal issues are? :oprah:

This issue is common in every developed country. Of course we must not forget other factors, but we live in a world in which prices increase faster than what we earn. So, we need to work more time to live with the same quality, and can't spend enough free time to do what and meet who we want:shrug:
