Oklahoma School Closes After Violent Threats to Transgender Student

An Oklahoma public school dismissed classes Monday and Tuesday following declarations of “hunting season” on a transgender student. In response, a silent demonstration was held in support of the student Tuesday morning.

Maddie, a 12-year-old transgender student in the Achille Independent School District, moved to the town with her mother, Brandy Rose, when she was in the fifth grade and had been using a staff bathroom in elementary school.

"She's been living as female for years -- she started at Achille as Maddie," Rose told local TV station KXII. "We had no problems when we first started."

When Maddie first attended the middle school, she could not locate the staff bathroom, so she used the women’s restroom once.

Local resident Jamie Crenshaw found out about it and posted in  a Facebook group, the Achille ISD Parent Group, to complain. Crenshaw brought up a false accusation against Maddie for “looking over the stalls in the girls bathroom” when she first transferred to Achille.

Group members said they wanted to lobby against her at school board meetings, and some called Maddie a “thing,” “it,” and “maggot” and made violent threats against her.

“If he wants to be female, make him female,” one group member wrote. “A good sharp knife will do the trick.”

“Just tell the kids to kick ass in the bathroom and it won't want to come back,” wrote another member. Another said it was hunting season on transgender students.

Rick Beene, superintendent of Achille schools, took the Bryan County sheriff’s advice to close the school temporarily, citing possible demonstrations.

Maddie’s family filed a restraining order Friday against Facebook group member Burney Crenshaw, who had been tagged in Jamie Crenshaw’s post.

It's absolutely awful some old piles of trash are bullying/encouraging others to bully a little girl, but I'm glad the school is taking some precautions to keep her safe at least.

This literally breaks my heart. We have to stop hatred in this world. I wish I could move to another planet and bring only kind, open minded people with me while trash, like these kids and parents who commented, rot here with their violence and hate towards innocent human beings. Just disgusting.

F*ck those people. That poor thing...I wish I could give her a big hug and let her know there's millions standing behind her and would physically defend her in a heartbeat if given the chance. It's astonishing how absolutely despicable people can be to a TWELVE YEAR OLD.

I swear if I ever saw this kind of sh*t in person I'd start laying people out. Then again, these people wouldn't say this in person. They're cowards picking on a little girl through a screen.

It makes it even sadder knowing the school will eventually just say "look, 'he' is causing these problems for 'himself'."

FYI we are not all monsters. I’m gay and from Tennessee which isn’t far from Oklahoma so I know how it is growing up different. 

OP: This really breaks my heart. I thought I had it bad but social media had made it so much worse

I didn't say you all were. At least 65 million of you are decent humans. I feel so awful for the minorities born and stuck in southern states. What a nightmare.

tbh here you can sue someone if they discriminate you for being transgender, and the constitutional protection is not only citizen-government but citizen-citizen. ofc the USA will never include such protection in their country (many Canadian provinces don't) but hopefully they can get justice somehow
