Gaga's solo scenes in A Star Is Born

A Star Is Born (1954) and A Star Is Born (1976) both had their female leads deliver a one-woman show, which were met with critical acclaim and helped them land the Academy Award nomination/win for Best Original Song and a ton of other accolades, I also think these scenes are usually heavily scrutinised by critics and experts and if done well, they have a very good chance at pushing the actress's chances at landing a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

I think it's extremely important for Gaga to nail her solo performances in A Star Is Born, there needs to be one defining moment in the movie which people will talk about on and on, and which critics will cite in every article, and which will prompt Gaga to gain positive reception and/or acclaim from critics and audience. I'm sure Bradley and Gaga understand the craft and importance of solo scenes like this and included in their rendition of the movie.

EW actually mentioned a scene where Ally performs a ballad, it is unclear whether this is 'the IT moment' of A Star Is Born, but it likely is.

Spoiler

EW asked Gaga, “There’s a truly stunning moment with Ally singing a beautiful ballad at the Shrine in Los Angeles. Tell me a little about shooting that.”

Lady Gaga responded, “My very, very, very dear friend Sonja died of cancer that day. We were supposed to shoot in, like, 30 minutes, and I left the set because her husband called me and I could hear her in the background and I just got in the car and drove. I missed her by 15 minutes and she died. I literally laid with her, with her husband, and their dog, and his son… When I came back, Bradley was so gentle with me and we got through it. I performed the song. He was like, ‘You don’t have to do it again. It’s okay.’ All I ever wanted to do was sing. I’ll never forget that day. It was really a special scene, and I’ll always remember that moment.”

Rumours have it that there is a solo ballad by Gaga called "I'll Never Love Again", some fans have even heard it live and said she really showcased her vocals in that song. It might be the scene above. Someone who heard it says it's 'Bodyguard-level big' which I personally think is an exaggeration, but if anything what he meant was that the song is good.

History has shown how actresses who excelled in one-woman shows garnered acclaim and helped them land awards.

Anne Hathaway went on the win Best Supporting Actress.

Audition (The Fools Who Dream) is nominated for Best Original Song, but lost to City of Stars, which is from the same film.

This performance definitely prompted the academy into voting Emma Stone for Best Actress, which she won in.

I'm not sure if Warner will push an LG x BC song (likely to be The Shallow since it's featured in the first trailer) or a LG solo ballad (likely to be I'll Never Love Again) in their campaign, I'm thinking they might push both and take home two Original Song nominations, La La Land did exactly that, but there has to be only one winner. Some predictors actually think A Star Is Born will be nominated twice in Original Song.

There is another solo scene which seems really important that is not part of what EW mentioned:

I think these are crucial dramatic scenes that will really define whether Gaga stood a chance at Best Actress or not.

I'm sure her last scene will be another career-defining moment and will most likely get her a Best Actress nomination.

Miracle

People who went to the shootings and the first screenings said her last performance was heartbreaking, comparing the song to IWALY. She recorded it near Sonja's death.

It's bizarre how we're already putting all these expectations on Gaga when we have never even seen her attempt something like this. Her acting in AHS was a completely different thing, and even though the trailer looks great we don't have any material to truly gauge her actual range and skill.

Sure, it's great to be optimistic and to support her. But chances of getting an Oscar nomination are always slim, even for the most experienced and renowned actors and actresses. You never know what the Academy is thinking. Let's at least wait for the movie to come out (which is exciting enough without Oscar buzz), and after that we'll see to what heights it might bring her.

If you are talking about predictions, I'm only reporting what the websites are saying. What I did was copy and paste their predictions and post them on this site. And you could actually see how there is a general consensus among the predictors as to who actually stands a chance and who does not. Of course they are not conclusive, that's why they are predictions, they are subject to change once the films are released and reviews come in. But they could actually do that based on the trailers and talent behind the films, and the names attached to the project give some kind of confidence and expectations to us as to what the movies would look like.

If you are talking about this thread, well I'm merely discussing the importance and craft of how one-woman shows have made the actresses successful in the past. It's part of filmmaking and there's nothing wrong with a little bit of an analysis, no?

Your OP is actually not that bad, so sorry if you thought I was specifically directing my post at you :diane:. It was mainly pointed at comments of people who are already praising her performance to the heavens and already basing their expectations on tiny bits of information and speculation. The movie industry is fickle and the Oscars are notorious for making strange/unpopular choices, so all I want to do is for people to manage their expectations a little :emma:.

Oh thanks for clarifying.

If you ask me I'm actually still speculative as to her acting in A Star Is Born, I am not 100% convinced that she will be acclaimed by critics the way Jennifer Lawrence or Amy Adams has been. I need to see more before I know.

I know most Gaga fans have higher expectations on Original Song, which is reasonable, I mean almost every single prediction places A Star Is Born at #1 in their list. I think many people here know that Best Actress is the tough category here, a lot of people here just hope that she gets nominated at the very least.

Anyway, I'm a huge movie fan. I thought it'd be nice to analyse what makes a movie successful and what kind of scenes are regarded by the public as the most powerful and how the actors could touch the hearts of the audience in these scenes.

Ok if I'm being SUPER honest it's maybe not on the same level as IWALY. It is tremendously powerful but I hope people aren't expecting it to be like IWALY cuz it's definitely not. I'd put it more in the realm of Til It Happens To You - very powerful and heartbreaking but strong.
