Asylum, Hotel, and Cult round out the top three for me.

Asylum is pivotal American Horror Story to me- pure dread, camp, and absolutely compelling performances from nearly everybody on the cast (although I didn't quite fully enjoy Lizzie Brochere as much as I wanted to). For me, it really changed the game for how television could be, up until Hannibal came out later on in 2013 (give it a shot- it's literally one of the best television shows ever created).

Hotel is a doozy for me, only because it's literally so polarizing. The first few episodes were astonishing exposition- glamorous horror with heaps of grandiosity, mixed with outright shock. And then it kind of dipped into a few episodes of exhausting nothing, until finally ending on a very campy, very soap opera kind of note (which I surprisingly loved).

I know people go on and on about how the vampire subplots were useless, but I definitely would have rather taken that over the absolutely AWFUL narrative arc that was the "Ten Commandments Killer". It's funny, because I feel like the interactions of the Ghosts (James Patrick March, Sally) and the cohorts of The Countess (herself, Liz, Iris, Rudy, etc), with and between each other, were actually really well-done. Shame they weren't explored as much.

Also, episode 7, "Flicker", is definitely in top 5 AHS episodes ever.

Cult was such a clean and concise season for me. I know the political overtones really turned people off, but I thought it was done fairly tastefully, objectively, and humorously. There was no "SJW" bashing, which I anticipated, and the humor in this season was honestly beyond what I expected. The absolute terror I felt regarding the small-town cult doing home invasions, coupled with the unnervingly dry humor that was written into the show, was such an interesting combination. Kudos for this season for also feeling like it was actually written all the way through, unlike seasons 3, 4, and 5.

Also, Adina Porter really sold the season for me- she was the character to watch, imo.

tl;dr: Asylum is peak AHS, Hotel is super odd and entertaining minus the TCK plot, and Cult was a tight, clean, and suprisingly humorous ride.

Spoiler

Of course, every season has its perks.

Murder House was a great start, I'll give it that.

Coven was incredibly fun, and gave us two iconic and compelling characters- Madison Montgomery and Marie Laveau.

Freak Show was a pretty good character drama, and gave us Orphans, which is probably the show's most heartbreaking episode.

and Roanoke, which, for all the limitations in its two main formats, was a very fresh change. Its usage of conventional and classic horror tropes also, for the first time in the show, legitimately scared me.
