When the song was released in 2011, gay marriage still wasn't legal throughout the US, President Obama still hadn't publicly stated his support for same-sex marriage, the Defense of Marriage Act was still alive and well, Don't Ask Don't Tell had been repealed just months before, the UN still didn't endorse gay rights, and only half of Americans supported same-sex marriage. I agree that it may had prolonged her peak in a way. But it's just speculation and there are plenty of other things that could have occurred...
