Was Kreayshawn ahead of her time?

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm in no way saying that Kreayshawn is a good rapper. I've never cared for her. All I'm claiming is that some of her material at least, was perhaps misunderstood upon its initial release because her style wasn't were rap/hip hop was at. I reviewed Something 'Bout Kreay back in 2012 and gave it a super harsh review, calling it one of the worst albums I'd ever heard with only one good song. And I think it's partly because I found her style so weird and jarring at the time and I just didn't get it. But now with the rise of trap music (something I didn't even know existed in 2012), Soundcloud rappers, mumble rap and rappers who are borderline bizarre, I guess I get Kreayshawn a whole lot more now. Listening back to her album, it just makes a bit more sense, even if I'm still not a fan. I can now see what she was going for, she just put it out too early. She actually got good critical reviews but the public trashed her and the album barely charted. She's fallen off the radar ever since. But listen to some of this and tell me that this music wouldn't look out of place today:

Not only was this the first time I ever heard the term "basic bitch," but she makes a super timely reference to Trump, she's rapping about Gucci (not unlike a certain Lil Pump last year) and her whole style and delivery is so current. This was SEVEN years ago.

I didn't even know what twerking meant in 2012 and I listen to rap. I just thought it was called booty/ass shaking. I had no idea there was an actual specific term for it. I believe this was the first time I ever heard this term and it was a year before twerking hit it big as a mainstream trend. I just didn't understand this song in 2012, now, while it's hardly brilliant, I get it.

This sounds not unlike a lot of "ratchet" type of rap around right now. I totally didn't understand it at the time. Again, I don't think it sounds as bad as I remember it being initially.

And, because I think this is her best ever song, just take a listen to this chill song that makes you feel like you're in LA even if you're a million miles away:

So, what do you think? Do you think Kreayshawn was just misunderstood and started out at the wrong time? Even if you're still not loving her work, do you at least think it wasn't as bad as you remember it?

I love kreayshawn, she needs to release a second album but the label dropped her :(

I used to really hate her songs except gucci gucci, I thought "there has to be other songs as good as gucci gucci" so I tried listening to her album. Gucci gucci is the song where her voice sounds the best, in the other songs her voice doesn't really sound that good but the way she raps is amazing. I used to get so annoyed of the old school beats and the way she sounded but after I forced myself to listen to it, I started to like it, I guess I was just drowned out by all the other mainstream beats and voices I heard on the radio that caused me to think that something that was different was bad.

Now all those songs she makes are bops to me, I love the beat of the songs, so energetic and it sounds good when I dj them on loud speakers. Now her rapping voice sounds better too, I think its cause she aged and her voice got more mature. The style she gave off on the Somethin Bout Kreay album was a little late for the current time. I think she cam get back up the charts if she got signed again, currently she's broke tho.

I've been a fan of rap since the early 00's, and have listened to old school stuff as well as new. I listen to almost all the mainstream stars as well as smaller ones. Though I only listen to the mixtapes of ones I actually like. I prefer old school stuff and felt the kinda rap I like tailed off in 2006 and its never recovered since. I'm saying that when I heard Something Bout Kreay in 2012, I'd legit never heard of anything like this. Maybe there were more unusual rappers then and earlier but I wasn't aware of them. I just thought she was so strange back then and didn't get it. Now I at least understand it. All I can think of as to the reason behind it is that her style became more prevalent over time and I gradually got used to it, meaning she was perhaps ahead of her time. I've seen many comments on Gucci Gucci that say the same thing and that's what led me to making this.

I don't know who she is.

Maybe you're too young to remember or don't follow the wider music scene? She broke out with Gucci Gucci in 2011 and it was somewhat of a viral sensation at the time (although viral sensations by 2011 standards is nowhere near as big as they are today). She was widely mocked by many and fell off after her debut album. But Gucci Gucci is still somewhat remembered all these years later, even if it's just for the cringe factor in the eyes of many.

I have seen her in live at a french festival on a tiny stage and it was very cool. It gave me Die Antwoord vibes :) But I dont think she was ahead of her time just not mainstream

I don't know anything about this artist. But reading your post and then listening to the YouTube videos, I have to agree that it wouldn't sound out of place now.
