THR on ASIB: "It could have greater commercial than critical potential."

Oscars: How the Fall Film Fests Will Shape Awards Season

[...]

"One oddity about Venice: Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born (Warner Bros.), the fourth film version of the classic Hollywood melodrama in 81 years, which stars Cooper and Lady Gaga, will debut at the fest — out of competition. It is unclear why the pic's backers, presumably, have opted to take it out of the race there and will then skip Telluride, unlike many other Venice titles, and go directly to Toronto. But Barbra Streisand, the producer and star of the 1976 version, recently told me that she — like Robert De Niro, Sean Penn and other Cooper friends — has seen this version and "it's a lot like mine." That could indicate that it has greater commercial than critical potential."

I can't help but say... ok? Kinda pointless article

Too many people here with moral superiority complex.

It’s based on what they said.. A lot of reviewers who actually saw the movie said it will be huge competition. Just because it has some similarities to previous movie doesn’t mean it will be exactly like it. Actually I hope it will be nothing like the previous one because that one is not interesting.

It’s speculative. Though critics who actually saw it sees it has potential for the Oscars race. If it’s bad then let it be, but I don’t want negative press because it affects a lot of its Oscars chances.

Can anyone explain what 'out of competition' means?

Apparently if you read this article, there are films 'in competition' and there are those 'out of competition' but it doesn't explain much as to what they mean.

Like what are they competing for?

Maybe out of competition means they are not eligible for any awards of the festival.

I believe that Mamma Mia and ASIB will win plenty awards. Both happen to be my favorite movies this year and ASIB hasn’t even come out yet. :ladyhaha:

Oh I didn't know they handed out awards at film festivals. Thanks for clarifying.

That's what she meant. The plot is pretty much the same from what I can see in the trailer.
