they both have a very different approach to songwriting, i dont think you can compare it, really.

Sometimes it feels like I've got a war in my mind, I wanna get off but I keep riding the ride

Have to disagree on the diverse part... Lana is literally always writing about the same stuff

This is the biggest problem

She makes references to a lot of things, sets an atmosphere but are the lyrics that good ? She also has her share of meh and cringey lyrics. "I live to love you and I love to love you", "It hurts to love you but I still love you", "sick as cancer" (:toofunny:), "you fit me better than my favorite sweater". Her songs are cool at first but there's definitely some laziness (almost repeating the same verses throughout the song, constant repetition of the themes, words, expressions throughout her music...).

Neither one of them are great writers lyrically but honestly, coming from someone who loves Lana, her lyrics are anything but deep and diverse :toofunny: She's improved a lot but literally most of her earlier work is just cliche and repetitive... Coney Island Queen, daddy, loving abusing men, like.... we get it sis.

"Who are we, if not slaves to this torment?"

So many things to say about this thread duh : I love both so much...

First of all I think Lana is not that repetitive, because the theme of love is never-ending, and sometimes the theme seem to be the same but she expresses something very different, her point of view changes, and she still surprise me. For example Cherry is like nothing else and releases some intricate point of view on love when I already though that blue jeans was everything.

I think too that both Gaga and Lana are a little bit underrated about how cool their lyrics are. Or how they are put together into the albums, like for example Mary Jane Holland could be just a boasting song about getting high, when put aside dope it gets to another level (and actually it's not a good example since MJH is not that shallow)

And in the end if I remember well they're both close to the same labels and show business people that might have gave her same advices about how to write "pop songs". (I said previously that they're from the same school), they both have some influencers in common... So I would say that this is one of the rare thread of comparisons between two artist that I  consider interresting

sorry for the long post :) :lana::bye:

Like someone said they have different Writting styles so you can’t really compare them. And Gaga has some amazing lyric gems in her discography so....

I do think Lana is the better writer. Gaga's got every other aspect down but as a songwriter, Lana's got the edge. Her music is just so lyrically rich. It's a joy to see an artist who's all about creating long verses and choruses as there's precious little of that these days. If we're talking about her best written song per album, I'd say Off To The Races, Gods And Monsters, West Coast, Salvatore and Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind. I don't know how anyone could listen to these and think she's not a stunning poet. It's beyond me how she's yet to win a Grammy. She's barely even been nominated. Just shows that the academy base this thing more on commercial popularity than they'd like you to believe.

I don't see anything wrong with those lyrics. You're focusing on one part of them instead of looking at what they're rhymed with and the bigger picture. A lot of lyrics do sound a bit odd if you only look at half the rhyme in isolation. And personally, I think "I live to love you and I love to love you" and "It hurts to love you but I still love you" sound beautiful, with her tone you can tell she really means these words as well.

But when judging lyrics, I think it's better to only judge the words, not the melody or the way it's sung. If you don't know the song and only read the lyrics, these examples don't seem very inspired.

But judging the words would involve looking at the complete line, not one part of the line. Cherry-picked examples are meaningless without context. And I think the melody and the way it's sung also plays an important part. I've started to like songs that I didn't like before when I learned to appreciate the tune. When there was that episode of Elders React on YouTube, they did a Lana episode and it involved the elderly people reading some of her lyrics aloud without hearing the music. Not all of them were impressed with Cola, with lyrics like "my p***y tastes like Pepsi Cola, my eyes are wide like cherry pies." But then when they were actually made to listen to the lyrics as part of a song, then they were all: "Now those lyrics with the melody really talks." I'd probably think those lyrics were trash based on those words alone, but when you hear her sing the words, everything suddenly makes sense, the theme she's going for, the character she's portraying. It's all about immersive experience.

I mean Gaga is still trying to stay in a main stream light so her music has to be digestible to a large audience.

Lana has a niche that makes her successful so I think she has more freedom to be “arty.”

Yes, it's more about the way the music compliments the lyrics. But this is about writing only, and that's why I don't think she's that good as a writer.

True, but it also doesnt need to be dumbed down to reach the mainstream. You are underestimating mainstream intelligence. Especially with songs like "This is America" being #1 on the charts.

That’s an exception... generally, songs that are on top of the charts are straight forward and easy to understand.

The majority of the top 10 is filled with digestable bops. I’d like to be proven otherwise but it’s just the truth.
