SlaeUrAnus 15,955
I think this stems from years of Pop music dominating the charts during Gaga’s reign to the sudden demise of Pop music today. People are too nostalgic of the times when Gaga, Katy, Beyoncé etc. were all releasing bops in the same year so we had a massive diverse of Pop music to listen too. However, Dua is one of the rarest pop girls who is having some success in the modern day charts (apart from TS and Ariana). She is a good singer, she’s just a very stiff performer. If she can curb that she would be a very good performer that could potentially make her the new ‘it’ girl. In my messy era.
Dunk96 2,526
I don't think it's just the gays complaining about the landscape of pop music currently and to assume so is quite ridiculous. It's not people being snobbish,it's people taking sh*t to the heart and seriously to the point that it becomes this issue. Pop music is in a down point right now and to deny it is hilarious. Dua is a basic and boring artist. That's not just me being a "music elitist". She doesn't offer anything exciting to the table. Her voice is basic, her live vocals are subpar, her performances could be boxed into a category of removing her from the performance and placing any other artist in,etc. I miss the days of music even before Gaga's time where songs got you pumped up and excited with the way the song was structured and the lyrics had significant and meaningful messages. Now music is just copy and paste. Anybody who is pretty by default, male or female, can just be packaged up by a record company and thrust into the spotlight without any wiggle room for talent in the vocal, songwriting,or dance departments. The reason why there are legends like Michael,Janet,Madonna,Prince,Bowie,Cher,Celine,Mariah,Whitney, etc. is because they offered new things to the table constantly between electrifying performances, dancing, raw emotions, singing, reinvention, pushing boundaries with gender and equality that the vast majority of pop artists today just aren't doing (there are very very few exceptions). So it's just a sign of the times with music where it's in a slump. It's not me saying we need Gaga or any artist to pull us out of it. We need the musical landscape to get out of this generic space and get back to genuine energy instead of this manufactured beauty contest (this applies to both male and female artists as well). Sebastiaan De Graaf 201
We just need some originality in this music landscape. Let's wait and see
DaftFameMonster 2,527
I have something called an opinion and it is my opinion that modern pop music is mostly trash. Tropical house has to be one of the most dull and played out sounds I've ever heard and I'm over it. I, like others are probably just waiting on the soundscape to change, which is long overdue at this point. I myself appreciated the harder hitting sounds we used to have in pop music but again, its my OPINION which I'm entitled to have. If anything cool has come out of this pop slump, it's that I'm more into techno, rock, alternative and other genres than I ever used to be. Those artists are continuing to bring new things to the table that most new artists aren't. Its just not cutting it for me right now. Perhaps this is more representative of the music industry and it's pressures but I mean Katy was pretty generic in the Teenage Dream era but that didn't stop her providing us with iconic sounds and visuals. (I'm not a fan just being objective) Anyways

But yes, pop music from 2008-2011 was just more versatile and more "depht" (musically but also lyrically). Maybe because of Gaga, maybe not

Everytime a new pop girl starts having success, gays start calling them overrated and their music **** all of a sudden. But then go and complain about the lack of pop in charts; youre not helping. How about instead of hating someone because you dont like them, hate them because they do actually lack likeable qualities? Take these Dua Lipa is overrated threads. Gays listen to New Rules and scream BASICBASICBASICTRENDHOPPING without even taking a look at her past. "One hit wonder" when she has been a hitmaker in Europe for YEARS. She cant sing? Bitch is you DEAF? And whats with the sudden hate for pure pop? Gays were kissing Katys ass during the Teenage Dream era and all those songs are the definition of basic pop. Does that make them bad? No. But I hate dua lipa so I hate it when she makes pure pop! And here is the sitch; shes indie pop. Lmfao. Sure, she cant really perform live that well, she is stiff on stage, but she is a lot better im smaller venues. Nobody bats am eye when Rihanna messes up all the time performing and singing but when some new pop girls does it OVER CANCELLED TALENT LOST!!1!! So yeah. Dua isnt talentless and overrated. Neither is Bebe Rexha as much as I personally dont like her music, even Meghan Trainor. So stop trying to cancel every new singer, thank you. Not everyone can have Gagas artistry or Beyonces dancing and vocals. Rant over ✈ You say instead of hating on someone, hate them for having unlikeable qualities. Umm...isn't that the same thing? Most people's opinions of artists are not based on mindless hate, they dislike their music, voice, performances, personality. Just because you don't agree doesn't mean that they're uninformed or being overly harsh, it's just their taste. Of course they're going to complain about a lack of pop in the charts because the stuff that is there is awful! You'll only like pop if it's the good kind! Dua is a one hit wonder in most of the world, the UK is the only region where she's had multiple hits and where her album's sold really well. She can't sing amazingly - not to be offensive, but you have low standards if you think the video you submitted is an example of good vocals, barely passable. She's definitely not indie pop either, her music is the definition of mainstream pop in the current age. And I actually do call out artists for bad performances, not just her. And what makes you think it's just the gays who are complaining about this stuff? I'm a straight girl and I'm appalled at what my fellow women are bigging up as amazing right now, as well as the wider public. As women, we know that we're on average, much better singers than men and therefore know what good singing is and it's not this indie girl voice stuff. Forgive me for wanting pop music that's entertaining and I can actually dance to. Pop music used to be about big emotions, happy or sad, not this bland, neutral, monotone world that that modern popstars inhabit. This is not the pop music I grew up with and I hope it's not what pop music becomes. You have to realise that while, yes, I do want to see popstars and women dominate the charts again, they have to be good. It's pointless if they're not good. There's barely been any good albums this year, artists just try for the singles and don't pay a second thought to the entire body of work. The music industry needs to stop signing people with nothing special about them who the public will dump after 1-2 albums and the public need to stop upping their standards and not buying the s**t the industry's turning out. Demand quality and you'll get quality, accept mediocrity and you'll get mediocrity, simple.
JesseBabe 837
This whole post sounds like you just took it a little too personal that a lot of people aren't too impressed with Dua in a recent thread. I'm not saying she is trash and everything she does is the worst thing ever, but what really has she offered new and exciting to the pop scene? I just really have no interest in her current music. I don't think it gets deeper than that. I LOVE pop music, but I've also branched out to other artists and genres because I think currently pop music is a little boring right now, and has been for a while besides a few specific albums/songs. I'm not really interested or excited about the current people in pop; Charlie Puth, Meghan Trainor, Camilla Cabello, Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendes, Bebe Rexha etc. They're not really doing anything (in my opinion) completely new or serving me outstanding visuals and videos (like Katy for example in TD). Like yeah, some of them have cute bops I enjoy, but I just have a hard time imagining the longivity of some of these artists/songs. Like if those are people we have currently to save pop music, I'm just going to consider it dead.
