Artists should stop glamorizing drug use in songs

Given what has happened to Demi, and in general to people who choose to use drugs, I firmly believe artists should stop referencing drugs as a way to glamorize their consumption in their songs. I understand when they reference drugs as a way of discussion of a personal topic (a problem with addiction maybe, like Sia has done in the past due to her struggles with it), but when they're just named dropped for making the song "edgy" or "interesting", I find that to be irresponsible with the people who listen to their songs.

I know every person is free to live their lives as they want, but I think to promote that lifestyle of drug consumption through your work is just disgusting and harmful to many. There's already an opioid addiction problem in the US, and I don't think promoting it through pop songs will make it any better.

I mean I understand songs about drug struggles such as Dope. It doesn't glamorise drugs, but shows the darker side to things. I think a large problem is a lot of rappers who brag about their drug usage. That's where the real problem is.

If they are outright promoting the use of it, then I agree, I think they should stop doing that. However, if they're using it to talk about their struggles (i.e. Dope) or are using it artistically as some sort of metaphor (i.e. Perfect Illusion), I think it's fine.

Well, yes and no. Some people have mentioned Dope here, I can also mention Mary Jane Holland which is one of these cool "drug" songs (even if there's a lot of pain in there, but it can be easy to miss that if you're a casual listener). I think there are too many songs like these and it kills the original intent.

It's not deadly but it can lead to an addiction too, and so to major problems. Smoking weed isn't bad by itself, it becomes bad if you are addicted to it.

I think singers should stop emphatazing the usage of weed too, because ie in my country it's becoming a big problem.

Glamorizing hard drugs and addiction is a hard no from me. Artists are of course still free to do it, think of I Can't Feel My Face by TheWeeknd or Blurred Lines with cocaine references. I mean I think in general that people ought to be smart enough not to take pop and rock stars as their role models. They live different lives in a different atmosphere.

 

Weed isn't a hard drug though (Mary Jane Holland anyone?), alcohol funnily enough is.

If they're singing about heroin and meth yeah I'm against it, but if they're singing about weed then let the songs play lmao unless there's a bigger movement to also remove alcohol, cigarettes, violence, unsafe sex, etc.
