It's amazing how seriously Beyonce takes herself these days. She really believes she's good enough to film in all these historic locations that hold such significance. Filming in the Louvre took her to a whole new level of pretension and self-righteousness. Maybe when she produces a painting herself, she can think it's appropriate to film a video in the most famous art gallery of all time.

And visual album on Netflix? She still chooses options where her fans have to pay twice to access the music (on itunes/Tidal for the first few weeks and then a physical copy later)? This is getting really tiresome now. When will people tire of her very clear money-hungry schtick. No other artist keeps their music this protected. Surely the public must start to see through her by now?

??? I'm not the biggest Bey fan (am not even a fan), but to say that you need to paint something to film in the louvre is just ludicrous. That's like saying you can't take a photo of a TV because you never produced a TV show, or that you can't sing in the shower becasue you never had a #1 record. It's even beyond that, totally ridiculous and elitist.

Taking a photo of a tv or singing in the shower is nowhere near the same level of filming in the Louvre, so you've made a huge false equivalency. The Louvre is the world's most famous art gallery, housing what is considered by many to be some of the greatest paintings of all time by some of the world's most famous painters, most of whom are centuries old. For Beyonce to film in such a place suggests that she thinks she is as good as the artists displayed and that her art is on the same level or better than theirs (and adding in the suggestion that black artists are so underappreciated by the world, which is obviously not true in the current music market). That's what the Apes**t video is all about - pure ego.

that's not even remotely true. Filming in the louvre can mean so much things than that narrow interpretation. Maybe she's aspiring to be like the greats (which is not the same as being one), or explaining how she's inspired by them (which, again, is not the same as being one), or a lot of other meanings that vary from person to person. To take a music video's meaning for granted and thinking that it is a universal truth is very wrong.

But I have looked at it beyond the simplistic. The entire song involves Bey and Jay bragging about how far they've come and bragging about all the amazing things they have. It really goes no deeper than that. So, to film it in the Louvre says that they think that know they've achieved fame and wealth, they are now on the same level as the greatest artists of all time (because artistic talent and fame/success have always aligned!). Then, as if that wasn't enough, they give us a pretentious racial angle to it, starting with a young black boy in urban clothes wearing angel wings hovering outside the building, Bey and Jay standing motionless in front of the Mona Lisa, black women dancing with Beyonce in front of the Louvre's paintings, a black man having his natural hair cut by a black woman in front of the Mona Lisa. It's all tied up in this really arrogant way of depicting modern race relations and the whole "why are there only white artists in the Louvre?" (as if they can't use their brains to work out the non-racist reason for that). Art like this thinks it's so profound and saying more than it is.

Art is subjective and you can't just say "this means that" and go on with your day. As I said, there's no universal truth here.

It may be subjective in the sense that you can't officially define what's factually good or bad art but it can be very objective with its actual output. By the way, look up any YouTube video explaining the references made - they all say the same things I'm saying. The only difference is, they're acting positively towards it. This many people can't be wrong. Anyone with eyes, ears and a brain and work out what's being suggested here.

The fact that many YT videos are saying the same thing doesn't mean its the only possible meaning. It only means one person said that it meant that and others were like "yeah this sounds deep ill make a video repeating it". And you're saying "this many people can't be wrong" and no, they aren't wrong, it's just that they are explaining the meaning of the video from the perspective of a single person, not working themselves to find a personal meaning but repeating the meaning they read or saw in other videos.

If you're not a fan like you claim, why are you defending them so much? Bey and Jay are not that deep. Their music is very straightforward and easy to understand, as are their videos. Not all art is super hard to decipher or is designed to be. I somehow doubt these people, who didn't even graduate high school or pursue higher education, can make videos with obscure historical and philosophical references that even educated people can't pick up on. Let's be real here.
