ROMANIA: HUGE step towards same-sex marriage

When Adrian Coman moved back to his native Romania in 2013, he assumed that his American husband, Claibourn, would move there with him. Unfortunately for the couple, Romania does not legally recognise same-sex marriages; up until 2002, homosexuality was still a criminal offence.

Romania did not recognise their marriage and Claibourn was only allowed to stay in Romania for three months before he had to return to the USA. The couple stayed in the USA whilst they went through several court hearings, hoping that Claibourn would be allowed in as Adrian’s husband, eventually ending up at the European Court.

In what is undoubtedly a positive step for LGBTQ rights, the European Court has ruled that Claibourn should be allowed to live in Romania as Adrian’s husband. ‘Spouse’ was found to refer to married people, regardless of gender, even if a particular country doesn’t allow same-sex marriages. The decision is helpful in showing that same-sex couples should be treated equally to heterosexual couples.

Today, The Constitutional Court of Romania has ruled that Romania has to respect the European Court decision and from now on, same-sex couples who got married in the EU will be able to move to or live in Romania as spouses!

Important: IT IS NOT LEGAL YET TO MARRY A SAME-SEX PERSON IN ROMANIA BUT THIS IS A HUGE STEP FORWARD!

They were pretty much forced to do this decision. Untill this country would get rid of the brainwashing epidemy that's the church, it'll sadly never be pro-LGBTQ

My country has reached insane levels of corruption and defiance of the partners (EU, NATO, US) that nothing surprises us anymore. The CC basically turned the President into a notary. He can't do much anymore, he is kind of there for the signature and he's basically forced to do most of the things the Parliament (or the corrupt Court) rules.

We are going through some pretty sad stuff in Romania right now

I'm not talking about the corruption thing but it's not necessarily a bad thing to not give too much power to a president. I mean look at Germany, almost nobody outside the country know that Steinmeier is the president :laughga:

Yeah but our legislative is corrupt as hell

The President and the opposition are the only ones who actually try to fight corruption and represent our real values
