Katy talks about Witness for Vogue Australia

The noise of being a public person is an issue Katy will wrestle with for the rest of her life. “There will always be noise,” she shrugs. But in the past year, Katy’s tight-knit crew of friends watched as she developed tools to control how it affects her. Last January, she attended a week-long program at the Hoffman Institute, a California-based personal growth retreat that, according to its website, “helps participants identify negative behaviours, moods and ways of thinking that developed unconsciously and were conditioned in childhood”.

Katy explains: “For years, my friends would go and come back completely rejuvenated, and I wanted to go, too. I was ready to let go of anything that was holding me back from being my ultimate self. I have had bouts of situational depression and my heart was broken last year because, unknowingly, I put so much validity in the reaction of the public, and the public didn’t react in the way I had expected to … which broke my heart.” After a decade of back-to-back hit albums and record-breaking successes (she tied Michael Jackson for most number-one hits off a single record in 2011), her career hit a plateau with 2017’s Witness album. “Music is my first love and I think it was the universe saying: ‘Okay, you speak all of this language about self-love and authenticity, but we are going to put you through another test and take away any kind of validating “blankie”. Then we’ll see how much you do truly love yourself.’ That brokenness, plus me opening up to a greater, higher power and reconnecting with divinity, gave me a wholeness I never had. It gave me a new foundation. It’s not just a material foundation: it’s a soul foundation.”

Poor Katy she appeared to be so cheerful during the Witness era only to be broken inside.

This has some intense 2013-2014 ARTPOP vibes. I'm happy to see Katy open about it, and I wish her the best! She totally can, look at our queen now: movie star, best half-time in decades, Joanne was an incredible comeback record, LG6 coming through, etc etc etc

I think Witness is her wake up call..

The girl is holding her talent and creativity since day 1, she's searching for the hits and achievements instead on focusing on the music and what she can actually bring to the world..

She needs to ditch Max Martin and other bubblepop producers and hit makers..

She needs to explore her music even deeper, to take many big risks, because, you may like her on not (I don't like her tbh) she is very talented..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

She should stick up and continue being what she truly is and making music that makes her happy and excited!

I would be really disappointed if she was back to blue wigs and all that just for the success because in the end it won't make her happy

Witness was an underperformance, but just like ARTPOP, I wouldnt call the era a flop. It could be better? Yes. Was it a total disaster? Not really. I wish her the best, she seems really nice

I liked Witness more than any other Katy album because the album felt real and she wasn't singing about partying anymore.

The public obviously didn't want Katy to mature as an artist and they ignored everything since Bon Appetit.

The singles from the album are not representative of the album at all and the era could've been more successful if she chose better singles. I still feel she will do well after this but she won't have a recovery like Gaga because that's not Katy's brand.

It's also nice to see everyone reacting nicely to this considering how Katy's fans treated us during ARTPOP.

I love her. Witness was an amazing album that deserved better and was heavily underrated.

Ownn she is just so sweet. She was acting goofy and funny but she was truly sad and broken inside. Pretending to be alright while you're feeling down is the worst feeling ever.

Seems she's grown.  That's good.  Seems like just yesterday she was shading PI on twitter once it started falling on iTunes.  Oh well.  Nothing like a good ol' string of flops to bring you back down to earth and make you grow eh.  That karma does keep receipts don't she. :trollga:

Katy's never come across as the brightest crayon in the box but this is the most intelligent I have ever heard her speak. The way she put it down really made me feel for her, even though I'm far from her biggest fan. Trying so hard on something, expecting it to do well and then having it thrown back in your face is a difficult but ultimately, character building experience. We can remember how awful it was when AP seemed to leave the public consciousness and it didn't even get any Grammy nominations and that is precisely what Katy's going through right now. I'm hoping this whole thing has humbled her and perhaps inspired her to stop chasing generic hits and make the truly mature album that she's been promising since Prism. All her contemporaries who are in their 30's are doing their own thing now and having a good degree of success with it, so she should just follow their lead. She got 4 albums worth out of a child/teen friendly image and sound but now it's time to properly grow up. If nothing else, she may get her best critical reception out of it.
