imnotyourbabe10 6,101
Don't gay people play straight people and vice versa? Can a cis person play a non-cis person and vice versa? I am confusion. Coming from a social science background, I can't even deal with the PC police these days. It's not like Mike Pence stood up and said he wanted the part. I imagine Scarlett Johansson is an ally to the community anyway. I would argue that there are no good roles for the LGBTQ community in Hollywood or TV. They're all insanely heteronormative or homonormative. I've heard that even the new Queer Eye is making over gay people -- like, WTF -- that just adds fuel to the fire of divisiveness and conformity in what is supposed to be a rad, queer, outlandish community. In reality straight, cis people get to play every role while actors from the LGBTQ community barely get casted in any major roles. The least Hollywood can do is leave queer roles to actual queer people otherwise they don't get any work at all.

What about trans actors playing cis, or gays playing straight or straight playing gay? It's called acting. Anyone protesting her having this role needs a big fat look at themselves. Honestly. Dude, I was literally thinking the same thing and I thought I was the only one. If it's wrong for scarlet to play a trans female.. by that logic shouldn't it be wrong for someone in the LGBT community to play a straight person as well?. Like I understand that people in the LGBT community need more opportunities in the industry but is firing a straight woman from her job the way to do it? (Figuratively speaking, I know that's not what happened) And like she pointed it out, it's been done for so long. I'm not saying that makes it right but why single her out and bash just her for it? Why not the other people involved in casting her? Why not the other movies? The people just LOVE picking on her! Too bad she's making millions regardless. 52 minutes ago, DelusionalGaga said: This is a notion that only exists in a perfect world. By limiting them to just queer roles, won't that be reducing their opportunities even more? And I would disagree with straight people playing every major role like take this list for example: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls056609117/ I'm not sure if it's true for every person on it but a lot of them are and we know them SO well. A lot of them I didn't even KNOW were gay (and am so glad they are, ifyouknowwhatImean ) -- The solution in my humble opinion would be to open roles of all orientation to everyone! Make a campaign to actively hire more people from the LGBT community who are talented and give them more chances to be in movies/shows. It doesn't have to be Scarlet's role, it could be any one! But this is ScarJo who is a major movie star and has a history of this kind of mess with Ghost In The Shell. So of course there will be more backlash. A lot of them I didn't even KNOW were gay (and am so glad they are, ifyouknowwhatImean ) That list is made out of mostly cis actors... Laverne Cox is the only transgender actor on the list. How many trans actors have gotten big opportunities? How many of them are playing cis roles? As allies of the Transgender community, we need to listen to their voices, instead of saying "but look at the gay community!" Trans actors have spoken about the lack of opportunities they get in Hollywood. Even Laverne Cox, arguably the most famous trans actor today, has spoken out about this. Even when trans actors get cis roles, networks are scared of giving a green light to these projects, as it happened to Laverne. If we were in a world were trans actors were not being discriminated against, where they could get into audition rooms no matter the role, then I don't think many people would be upset about this. But since there is discrimination, and in many cases trans actors lack opportunities to even audition, it's understandable why so many of them are speaking out about this. This is not the first time they have called this out. I do believe there should be a stronger push so that trans actors were being given the same opportunities cis actors get, but until that happens, it is understandable why trans actors would hope at least trans roles were given to them. Not to mention many trans people have spoken about the harm it does to their community when cis women are casted as trans men and cis men are casted as trans women, instead of having cis women playing trans women, and cis men playing trans men. Unfortunately we live in a world that has to have something to be upset about.

Bradley 59,157
Come on, it's just art. It's acting. It's entertainment. I find nothing offensive about Scarlett playing the role. Like others have said, cis-people have played non-cis roles before, and non-cis people have played cis roles before, I don't get why this is a big deal. You're an actor, you act, you bring out the life of the character you're portraying, you don't have to be 100% from the same background as the character does.
