So far, dozens of relevant people in the field of information technology have been strongly opposed to this proposal - among them, the creator of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, and the Internet pioneer, Vinton Cerf, 169 academics, 145 organizations for human rights, press freedom, scientific research and technological development; and the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that promotes, among other projects for free knowledge, this encyclopedia. For these reasons, the community of Wikipedia in Spanish has decided to darken all the pages of the encyclopedia before and during the voting of the text, that is, until 10 o'clock (UTC) on July 5. We want to continue offering an open, free, collaborative and free work with verifiable content. We call on all members of the European Parliament to vote against the current text, to open it up for discussion and to consider the numerous proposals of the Wikimedia movement to protect access to knowledge; among them, the elimination of articles 11 and 13, the extension of the freedom of panorama to the whole EU and the preservation of the public domain. In other countries of the Spanish-speaking world, such as Colombia and Mexico, the Wikipedia community has recently opposed similar proposals. Meaning you would have to purchase more expensive plans from internet providers to use certain things say you’d have to pay an extra $30 a month to use social media sites, individual sites could independently charge you a fee per month just to access their content (think how Kim K does this for her web content) etc Article 13 restricts and clamps down on the use of copyrighted material available to the public, it would make sites like Wikipedia and google images restricted or heavily controlled as a base example. You would have to pay for liscenses to use such material instead. For example Wikipedia in the EU would most likely end up having to be a paid service for the information, and if you’re found even posting copyrighted material online you could get suspended, warned or even worse sued. An example is the candid paparazzi photography company who wanted to sue LadyGagaNow for $100k PER candid image they posted and reuploaded untagged and uncredited to their social media and their gallery if they didn’t take the content down and promised to NEVER repost that specific companies material again. Same happened to gagamonster96 on twitter too, he’s been suspended multiple times now because a company has been reporting him for posting their images by searching through his tweets and reporting tweets from back in 2011 with BTW era candids he’s posted.
