She's never been nominated for an Oscar and she's getting desperate looking at her past roles she's taken (or rather given)

Because producers/directors (and several members of this site) don't view trans people past their assigned gender at birth. So why shouldn't they hire a woman to drag up as a man? Truly disgusting.

I just mean it’s common sense that people might be bristled by a non trans person playing a trans role. They were for Jared Leto, and people were even mad when ScarJo did Ghost in the Shell. It’s legitimately surprising that someone could have been so thoughtless lolol especially a producer since understanding the business is really the only reason you have them around.

...frankly if I were trans I’d be pissed off that I’m supposed to accept what straight people choose to give me as visibility and representation. This is profiting off of the trans experience without actually taking on the burden of engaging with the culture which is more than a little tasteless and tone deaf. ScarJo will be called brave and get hoards of nominations while people still look at trans individuals as he-she’s and man-lady freaks. I get why they’d be upset. It’s not just down to acting, there’s more to it than that. These casting directors don’t even seek out trans talent so the community isn’t even given the chance to run in the race. Plus, what if it’s troubling representation in the movie? The community should just accept that Hollywood at least deigned to feature a story of their’s? I don’t think it’s wrong to demand and fight for more especially when it would be better publicity for them to actually use a trans person since so few do. They could pat themselves on the back for a job well done and the trans community gets a real voice speaking and interpreting their history and truth. Win win. It’s an indie film anyway so it isn’t like it was going to be a blockbuster regardless

If a trans person was cast in a "cis-role", and someone complained the person complaining would be looked at as Hitler. If the opposite, its suddenly okay.

She is ALWAYS popping off with some stupid response to a crucial issue, yet it never seems to affect her. I think it's because she worked with artsy directors of "important" cinema in the beginning of her career, so it gives people the false impression that she's a great, prestige actress & intelligent.

Well, I wouldn't say we are attacking her, but criticizing her decision... she did decide to take this role (I'm not sure if she auditioned, but still) so its valid criticism. I don''t think the challenging aspect of the role is actually a good justification at all  It's still got the same effect. 

The director should be getting scolded more though. Especially since we know him to be problematic. He wanted to use CGI to make ScarJo look literally Asian on screen before he was talked down from it 

If they wanted an accurate portrayal, they would have at least contacted some Trans groups and representatives about this particular issue to not only weigh optics, but impact their approach to making the film. It's clear they didn't though, which is irresponsible to me to say the least.

i agree they should prioritise trans actors for trans roles, asian people for asian roles etc because i'm all for representation

i just don't think scarlett should be getting most of the backlash, i think the director and the casting team's names should be in the headlines rather than scarlett
