“He is not that relevant”

- you on this thread

If he isnt relevant then who is? If he is “not that relevant” then that makes every other artist a nobody.

i can confirm you that "he is not that relevant" is different than "irrelevant".

I disagree. For example, he never (and probs never will) headline the superbowl.

I think that's really just the nature of the Super Bowl tho. Rap music is not (generally) family-friendly. It's virtually guaranteed that a rapstar will never headline the Super Bowl by virtue of their genre. Aside from marching bands, performers have either been pop, R&B, or rock.

Katy Perry has had many hits, but she's never been the "it" person. Her album releases are never an event, and her single releases really aren't either. She hasn't exerted any noticeable influence on the music industry, and virtually all that she does is as a follower, not a leader. Every album she's released has received mixed to poor reviews – her highest Metacritic score is 61, and is her only album to be above a 60 (essentially a D grade).

Her biggest hit and arguably the most persuasive argument for her contributing anything impactful to the music industry is Dark Horse – which, with its underlying trap beat, was conceivably ahead of its time given rap/trap/hip-hop's domination of the charts right now.

Drake, similarly, hasn't contributed much to the hip-hop genre (as compared to genuine artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, etc.) but is not a straight hip-hop artist in the way Katy Perry is a straight pop artist. Hold On, We're Going Home was a pop/R&B song. That type of genre-crossing is what differentiates Drake from her.

I'm rambling, but God's Plan is (or will be, by the end of this year) significantly more successful than Dark Horse – not to mention that he followed it up with Nice For What, which will possibly be bigger than Katy's biggest hit as well. Unrelated, but Drake has also been recognized with 3 Grammy Awards and 27 nominations. Katy has 0 Grammy Awards and 13 nominations. Goes to show the way both artists are viewed critically for their material.

30 years from now, this generation will remember Drake much more than they do Katy Perry, if for no other reason than Drake's music holds water. Katy Perry makes bops, but nothing more.

y'all are wondering why Drake is pulling those numbers...it's because he's relatable and brings emotion into his songs.

you can hate the music genre and the artist, but his appeal is real and people are seeing themselves in him, that's why he's on top right now. people relate to people who come from nothing to something (no pun intended) and are vocal and open about their feelings and heartbreaks, etc.

Drake is probably the least problematic rapper out there and he deserves all the success he's getting and is going to get. I'm a Drake stan and I don't get the hate here at all. Let him be on top, it's not like he's hurting you personally doing it.

I agree. If an artist wants to be successful, they simply have to make music that relates to their audience, not some esoteric music piece to show how "brilliant" they are as a musician and yet claiming at the same time they have nothing left to prove.

Max Vandeburg

Drake is veeeeery overrated. The fact that his music makes such a monstrous success is just one example of how boring the music industry is today. It's just sad.

I really miss a "game changer" act in this business - something like Gaga 10 years ago.

I just don’t get the mass appeal that he has. Sure, some of his songs like controlla and one dance are nightclub bangers but other than that I really don’t get it. Good for his fans tho.

Feit: Just read through this thread and before y’all come for me i’m really happy for him. But personally his music sounds really boring to me compared to other hip hop artists like kendrick for example. But then again i’m not a major hip hop fan so what do I know. Kudos to him for pulling this off tho

He is not dull. Differentiate between not getting his music and being dull (i.e: Carly Rae Jepsen)

This is not surprising to anyone outside of the pop bubble.

And people only dislike streaming because their artists aren't as successful on it.

No, I perfectly understand - there's just this thing called personal opinion...and I find him to be dull.

The highly anticipated Scorpion, a 25-track set, has arrived.Drake'sth official studio album consists of an "A Side" and a "B Side," includes previously released smashes "Nice for What" and "God's Plan" and features the likes of Michael Jackson, Jay-Zand Ty Dolla $ign.

We hear the Scorpion tracks are streaming at Spotify at a rate of 10m an hour. On Apple Music's songs chart, Scorpion tracks occupy the Top 25 slots. Could this be the first 1b streams week for an album?

kind of a non question, if their info is correct (and it's not, a Tidal tea) he's done over 4.5 billion streams since you posted this thread :rip:

Also, he's a regular pop star, just cuz he's male it doesn't make him a rapper
