Honestly

i think Gaga is over winning awards, and being on top. she's had how many hit singles? how many #1s? She's literally done it all, broken so may records, and started so many trends. i think she's content with what she has, and is just making the music she wants to make, regardless if it will go #1 or not in 10 years shes done what most singers could only dream of doing in a lifetime. i think she's over making radio hits

It has nothing to do with gaga wanting hits or not. She’s free to make the music she wants but regardless of the sound, there should always be decent promo and an attempt to use a project to its full potential. She’s hasn’t done that since applause tbh and while she may be working hard behind the scenes, we can only judge by what we know. What we know is that promo and execution of singles have been messy or non existent since summer of 2013. IMO she and her team really should plan everything from singles, to videos and performances well before the start of an era so no confusion or disappointments occur. That way it’ll be less stressful for her as well during the era of everything is already pre planned and filmed. No more last minute single switches or no promo for lead singles pls

even new fans, streams, views, etc. If she worked even half as hard as she did during BTW, we would have many hits in our catalogue. There is no narrative to defeat, their is nothing standing in her way, except her lack of promotion.

so basically, Gaga needs to work her ass off in order for fans to live vicariously through her and feel good about themselves.

Not "your" hits, not "your" catalog.  90% of the complaining of fans of Gaga is because they feel like she is not supporting their own self image.  They want to stan a "successful" pop star by their measurements.   Gaga, on the other hand, only worries about her own goals and needs.  As she should.

Gaga is striving to find balance.... not work herself to death attempting to be #1 pop girl.    Early in her career that was her goal, now, not so much.  If she doesn't manage to support the fanbase's need for bragging rights, then so be it.

1. Gaga alienated her straight fan base when she released Born This Way and everything went downhill from there. Her "crazy meat dress lady" shtick got old and people simply stopped caring about her and moved on to other things. It's not that deep :laughga:

2. Perfect Illusion was doomed to fail because it wasn't radio friendly. I don't think any amount of promo could've saved that song. The Cure is a different story.

3. You mention promo for ASIB as if it's all up to Gaga, when in reality it's being taken care of by Warner Brothers. The contract will literally say "You will do 3 TV performances on the following dates, a press junket interview, interviews at these upcoming conventions, and tweet about the movie whenever we tell you to" and all Gaga has to do is listen to what they say. This isn't her project -- she's only a part of it.

Her biggest problem is that she was overexposed early on and didn't have the inspiration and/or creative team to keep up her parade of hits and triumphs, yet was pressured to go on anyway.

You gotta remember that her rise to fame couldn't be planned. It happened so fast for everyone, I'm sure Gaga had no idea what the **** she was doing, but in the rush of attention and amazing artists, designers, etc. helping her out, it didn't show.

It shows now because that aura of "omg who is this girl who's gonna change the scene" is 100% gone which makes it a thousand times more difficult to get that global attention back. Younger pop girls have already taken over her success now and she hasn't been able to build up the proper amount of respect to still rule over them (like Beyoncé).

For me the biggest mistake she and her team made was to focus so much on the fans after 2009. Her stans might not have noticed that she was basically repeating the same set of ideas every single music video but a casual audience will, and will check out. It was part of Gaga's brand to surprise, shock and amaze, and she's become predictable, and, worse, she's become way too easy to top on all fronts.

Gaga has no niche anymore. Except her die-hard fans who are, frankly, more annoying than anything else. I'm pretty sure Gaga often feels she doesn't even know what she's doing it for still. She wanted to be famous, now she got it, found out the money's great but the rest kinda sucks, and her whole artistic construction was never the genuinely manic project she pretended it was. But she has to keep pretending to keep her fans satisfied, unless she branches out in other areas (tv, film). She's in a tough spot and I don't envy her. But it's time for her fans to let her go.

This is so negative. Why are you here?

I feel like at this point it's not really possible to expect every single to be a massive hit. They had to choose between Million Reasons and Perfect Illusion to be the one song that defines Joanne the album and they went for Million Reasons. It's the reason why Million Reasons was performed at the Superbowl instead of Perfect Illusion. I don't understand why PI didn't get any TV performances, but we can obviously tell that they wanted Million Reasons to become one of Gaga's classics (the one which gets performed in future tours) and to possibly snatch a nomination at the Grammys, which ended up materialising.

So yeah I think commercially they don't care as much as they did, they are shaping Gaga to be one of the most legendary and respected artists of our generation, a successor to Michael Jackson and Madonna, and as we know Beyonce belongs to this category, and she barely does well on the Hot 100, her last top 5 hit was Drunk in Love, even though we all have to admit her albums do exceptionally well. I think Gaga, just like Beyonce, is more of an albums artist than a singles artist at this point and that's why they kinda ignored The Cure and Perfect Illusion.

So my conclusion is kinda that it's not that she's not trying, it's just that your primary focus and their primary focus are different. You want her to achieve commercial success, produce hit singles, whereas what Gaga has been doing ever since Cheek to Cheek and American Horror Story, and now A Star Is Born and basically the whole Joanne era, are cementing her as a music legend instead.

Whilst I comprehend your points and agree to some extent, we have to understand that she is not the same work horse she was 10 years ago.

Remember folks, she has a condition that hinders her ability to perform massively.

In my messy era.

Oh, I'm sorry, it's not meant negative at all actually. As you should have noticed, I didn't say a word about her artistry or the general quality of her career, just what I see as what happened to it in the margins

I mean, me saying that Gaga's too tied to her fans and their expectations is actually me supporting her and wishing she could just do whatever she wanted without label pressure etc. I don't see how that's negative.

Her label wanted A-YO to be the lead on Joanne, which I think would have gone down better than Perfect Illusion but they both compromised on PI.

Is it true? If it is, I missed it. Indeed, A-YO would have been a better lead single. By far.

Honestly I'm fine with Gaga having Joanne level success for the rest of her career in exchange for a comfortable artistic legacy, reputation as one of the worlds best live performers, and work/life balance that allows her to thrive and make meaningful music.
