"Joe Jackson, the father of music legends Michael and Janet Jackson, has died at age 89, a person close to the family has confirmed to the BBC.

Jackson passed away early on Wednesday morning after he had been in hospital for terminal pancreatic cancer, celebrity news website TMZ reports.

His death comes just two days after the anniversary of his son Michael Jackson's death nine years ago."

To Michael Jackson's family? Well Joe was abusive to Michael and his brothers, but Michael as he got older also got more respect for his father...because without his father's determination to have his kids get to the top, Michael, Janet and the other brothers would never have been where they were/are.

Let's not discuss the abuse of Joe towards his kids,please. He may have had a horrible past with them but that's exactly what it is: the past. As if they didn't have it hard enough losing Michael almost ten years ago,now Joe is not here as well. Please send condolences and prayers to the Jackson family because that's what they need most during this time.

I think it depends. If he changed, yeah. But if he was still a mean, abusive person to his death, he doesn't deserve thoughts and prayers. Of course, he doesn't deserve death, but same as XXX. He doesn't deserve respect just because he died.

Good riddance. MJ didn't like his father. It is well known that he beat his sons when they were growing up. He cared more about making music and money than their quality of life.

Poor Michael had issues because of it and never got to experience a normal childhood which is why he was a child stuck in an adult's body.

He changed later on in life and him and Michael repaired their relationship to an extent. As far as I know he was never abusive towards the newer generation of the Jackson family (i.e. Michael's kids and other Jackson family kids,nephews,nieces,etc.)

At the end of the day, I know Joe abused the kids, but Joe stood by MJ in his darkest of days and MJ did still love him. We must realise that is still a child’s father which they all seem to love and care for. May he rest in peace.

He beat and made his children work every single day of their lives since MJ was 6 years old. Do you imagine being raised like that? Working since you're just a kid, not being able to go even to the park to play? Those children grew up without friends.

I know some of the success Michael and Janet had was due to all of this, but I don't respect Joe now because he's dead. Though obviously I don't wish death to anyone. 

Even Michael changed his face because in his 20s after Thriller he saw his father's face every time he saw himself in the mirror.

Rip. But he was extremely abusive to all his children. He did birth legends, but you can see how his cutthroat parenting was detrimental to his children.

 I'm sure the man, how abusive he was to shape up his kids to be superstars had the best intentions for his kids...but he definitely was flawed. In any case... MJ was on better terms with his father during his later years, especially his last years.

But I'm also mad at the man his abuse defined MJ's being; in a way broken and yearning for his childhood.

One should never speak ill of the dead, but he was an abuser who caused harm to his children and his wife. He exploited his children for financial gain and did irreparable damage to their physical and mental health. I feel sorry that he is dead, but I feel more sorry for his children and more specifically for the late MJ for all the pain that Joe caused them throughout their childhood and their adult lives.
