Appreciating the cinematography of A Star is Born

So as I watched the trailer for ASIB, I can't help but notice the cinematography of this movie (lowkey cinephile here lol)

So I went to the official website of A Star is Born and found out that the director of photography (Matthew Libatique) for this movie was also the cinematographer of 'Black Swan', 'Requiem for A Dream', and 'mother!'

[Just some screen grabs of these movies for reference]:

Libatique mostly uses natural lights and films handheld to reflect a sense of reality for the movie.

I also came to realize that they really picked some already amazing shots to tell the story for the trailer of ASIB.

-lowkey reaching here sorry-

I really like these two shots because you can see Jackson being in the dark (maybe a symbolism of his self destructive problems and alcoholism) and that AA meeting being bright as a sense of hope and new life for him.

While Ally here is at the "light at the end of the tunnel", leaving the darkness/past as she finds new hope of being in the spotlight and be the star that she hopes for.

Some other great shots from the trailer:

LOVE these images you chose from the trailer. I have a new sense of excitement and appreciation for the photography now... that bathroom shot is stunning. Also the last one with the tear... so good.

The visuals were one of the first things I noticed in the trailer, it was absolutely STUNNING! That and the Shallow combined absolutely killed me tbh. :diane:

I was reading an article where they talk how the cinematography is top notch and how Bradley got a lot of help including editing by Jay Cassidy who did Silver Linings Book and American Hustle  :vegas:

Great photography indeed. I also feel like there's some influence from Clint Eastwood's style of directing in ASIB.

Black Swan is my favorite movie, I was so excited when I found out that its director of photography was working on ASIB.

This movie is going to be a visual treat, and with Gaga's vocals! Can October come already?

Yeah that wide checker floored bathroom shot is one of my favourites in the trailer, and I love 'Mother!' I could imagine Bradley wanting a lot of hand held shots as well as it being the DOP's style because films he's starred in before like 'Silver Linings Playbook', 'American Sniper' and 'Joy' all heavily use them and helps give ASIB a more realistic and stripped back feel so I think of all the ASIB's this will feel the easiest to connect to for the audience

Yeah the cinematography is amazing and was one of the things that stood out from the trailer the most.

And I love your interpretation of those shots.

Hopefully the Oscars reward such level of detail

OT: it's amazing. I LOVE the scene where the colors turn red as she walks on to stage.

A Reddit user noticed that the movie resembles a lot of a Clint Eastwood movie, which is definitely a good thing and I loved American Sniper.
