Agree. It was even a more tare thing for a straight guy to be so openly supportive of the gay community back then.

And showing his support in videos is someone most het men wouldn't dare today.

True, especially a rapper. The rap game is known to be extremely homophobic, so he was such a breath of fresh air.

Still bothers me that so many people dismiss him because he’s white and “corny” :grr:

Uugh. I'm sorry but this song makes me cringe. I mean it's great the some queer people like the song, I just personally feel a bit uneasy about it...

Like it's made by a straight man for a straight audience, so whatever, I get that... But like, was it necessary for the first verse to be about how he isn't gay? Did it have to be this self-indulgent opening about how difficult it was for him in 3rd grade when he thought he was gay, despite definitely being straight? Like wow, Macklemore, so brave of you to share that story with us. It must have been difficult. It's just so clearly directed to a straight audience and it attempts to be a strong political statement, but his statements are so palatable for the time.

I'm also probably pretty salty that despite the wealth of Queer rappers a white straight dude is seen as the representative of gay rights in rap. Same Love is fine, it's nice that it got attention in the mainstream. A gay anthem written by an actual gay person that explores the queer experience with more nuance and realism would be even better. There's no need in articulating a sentiment like "If I was gay, I'd think hip-hop hates me/Have you read the YouTube comments lately?" if you're a queer rapper, because, yeah, duh, that sentiment is your quotidian reality. It's not a shock; it goes without saying.

Mary Lambert is brilliant, honestly she is probably the only thing I like about this song.

Yes its an obvious comment on how as a child he was exposed to stereo types and was confused thinking he was gay just because some of the things he like was considered a gay thing.. Some children are raised to hate the LGBT community because there parents teach them that only Girls like certain things, if you like something a girl likes your a *******.. He just didnt know.. Just like any child doesn't understand what a stereo type is, they see what adults do, and hear what they say and take it as fact.. Its actually makes allot of sense.

Just because you keep a tidy room and can draw doesn't mean your gay..

Sometime you just have to listen to the words.. Really listen to the message.. Its clear what he was trying to say.

It's obvious what he is trying to say, this isn't new information to anyone  It doesn't make it more woke or intelligent... It's still so watered down, vapid, safe and mind numbingly shallow.

Like holy ****, when he was a kid he has stereotypes in his head that made him think he was gay wooow. Thnx for sharing Macklemore, so brave of u.

This stuff isn't something shocking or interesting in late 2012 . It's a straight guy speaking to other straight guys, it's a straight guy speaking to an audience that already thinks the exact same thing.

I'm just not super down with a queer anthem where the main artist makes it clear in the first few lines of his first verse that he is straight and then goes on in the first few lines of the second verse to drop the term "f*ggot"... I don't need a straight dude telling me how, if he was gay, he might think youtube comments suck... Like, really?

Like I said, it's cool some queer people like it. It's nice it got some attention. I just personally want more

It is when your in the Genre he is in.. I mean come on, really would think most people in the community would at least appreciate making a statement rather than just sitting back and watching and saying not a dam thing, or worse dragging us.. Its not the most "woke" thing no.. But at least he had the balls to do it when not many will.

At the time, "woke" wasn't really a thing and to me it never came across as a callously calculated thing like 'let's focus on that pink dollar and gain credibility at the same time'.

It was a risk in that he could just as well lose in sales eventually. And the whole thing could backfire.

Which apparently it has.

Not really - there are plenty of Queer rappers out there who are so much more interesting and offer a way more nuanced and realistic depiction of the queer experience. I'd rather listen to Kevin Abstract, Brockhampton, Mykki Blanco, Young M.A, Le1f, Zebra Katz, Taylor Bennett. 'Same Love' is just uninteresting to me as a queer person. He doesn't say anything particularly controversial, he doesn't say anything I can relate to, it's all very watered down.

Also Hip-hop has been queer for years before Macklemore was even born. The first rap song came out of the disco tradition, rappers like Cee-Lo Green and Andre 3000 have been doing drag for years, Common came out against writing homophobic lyrics, not to mention the countless rappers and artists who have supported Frank Ocean. While homophobic lyrics are pervasive in Hip Hop, they have never been more homophobic or heteronormative than any rock or pop song.

I've already said numerous times that it's cool some queer people like it, and it's cool a song like that got mainstream attention. That's all nice...

You can't make me like the song though :toofunny: It's cringy af. I don't need this straight dude spitting self-evident truths, telling me how he isn't gay, telling me if he was gay he might not like Youtube comments... It's just cringe.
