It's really up to the competition that year. Like you can't judge by saying 'hey it's a good song, why doesn't it have a Grammy?' I mean Million Reasons and Joanne are good music but apparently Ed Sheeran deserved it more according to Grammy voters. As much as Teenage Dream and Prism are good materials, they don't really match up to Born This Way or 21's standards, and I think Dark Horse lost to Say Something, Prism to In the Lonely Hour by Sam Smith, which were really strong competition for Katy Perry.

I'm just so glad Joanne and Million Reasons got nominated (even though they didn't win) because apparently Witness didn't even get nominated this time.

She can sing a tune but let’s not act like she’s some classically trained singer. Carrying a tune (Katy/Taylor/etc) is MUCH different than singing well.

Honestly....shes ok.  She has some bad moments but she tries and when she is good, it's not bad.

She is mediocre at best. She is as good with singing as she was with doing crowd surf. And we know how well that was. We all heard how she struggles to reach high note each time on live performances. She sounded out of breath half the time. None of her live performance in award shows are outstanding, save for the props and the gimmicks. And probably why she is never chosen to sing National Anthem on bonafide events so far. They know what's up.

She has improved a lot these last years, her accoustic performances are always nice.

Pop performances not that much, she's often out of breath even if she just walks on stage, and she has developped this annoying habit of holding the note way too long at the end of each sentence that she sings (from what I saw of the Witness tour she does it all the time)

Saying she can't sing is a reach because there are really worse singers out there, she just has a lot of improvement to do. Does she train her vocals frequently ?

Katy's problem is the way she writes her own songs. Especially audible with Firework, she wrote it in high key she has problem sustaining and reaching the notes live, because they're out of the part of her range where she is comfortable. The same goes for lower notes. She has a fair enough wide range, but is comfortable with only a little part of it. And she has problem staying on key while singing live especially on tv, might be nerves. But she is definitely nowhere near these ladies with technique. Just because one or two performances of her came out good doesn't mean she a good vocalist.
