LG6 Needs to be Woke

I just watched This is America (Childish Gambino), and I have got to say, I was mentally and emotionally blown away. It was art that talked about heavily important issues people are facing today (gun laws, racism, social unrest, etc.). Each movement, each frame, held a meaning wrapped in a dumbed down song (that's also very intricately crafted).

Then I thought, Gaga used to do this. Circa Telephone to Born This Way, her songs and visuals were talking about important issues cleverly wrapped in digestible pop hooks. Telephone talked about media, america, and it's glamorization of murder. Alejandro talked about homosexual oppression and religion. Born This Way talked about homosexuality, love, and acceptance. All of which were so beautifully packaged that the message just flew right past most of the GP's heads. This wasn't a bad thing. On the contrary, this sparked discourse which could ultimately lead to concrete change.

The reason why I'm analyzing Childish Gambino and Gaga side by side is because This Is America is the first music video I have been really excited to pick apart and internalize in a very long time. I missed Gaga when she was making art that had intricate layers of social commentary that you had to dig up. This definitely was the strongest reason I stanned in the first place. It wasn't the success, the fashion, nor the bops. It was that she had a voice and she wasn't afraid to speak in her own artful way.

My point is, I would really be perched to have her next era to be really woke but cleverly packaged. I want to be excited again. Woke Gaga is still there. Do What U Want and Perfect Illusion are perfect examples of commentaries for fame. I just need her to stand up as a queen again, fighting for us in the issues we do face everyday. She can do it, I just wish she would.

Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

I don't understand why people think artists have to be woke or political just bacause it's on trend.

It's great if they take a stand, but it shouldn't be a mandatory thing. And Gaga has never shied away with her political and social awareness. She just doesn't shove it down people's throats all the time.

I kinda agree but I think what's happening is we feel like sitting ducks amongst an administration that wants to ruin america and I guessing you feel sorta the same.

On the other hand, we can't force an artist to do anything. We can suggest but we don't really know if they'd listen.

It would be great if she has a few songs that touch on current issues but (and it's a big but) it'll be a "damned if you damned if you don't" situation.

She's tweeted "what can we do to help" on twitter before and twitter basically spamed her to bail an activist out. It's very touchy because there's always gonna be people that bring up her being "problematic."

so...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But she has been woke, only for it to cost her career dearly and to be labeled a freak supporting *****, and let's not forget everyone shaming her for being a white woman standing up for minorities back in 2017 IIRC leaving the poor woman SO confused. So no, I don't need Black Twitter's fake sympathy for a few sales, I want Gaga to stay away from "woke" culture as much as possible.

I wish politicians were woke instead and would make smth happen not singers trying to make something happen which will lead to nothing

You could've titled this "Gaga should include boundary pushing messages again," and switched up your wording a bit and you would've had a much better response than you're going to get from the use of the word "woke."

There's nothing worse than fake wokeness. If you make an album full of political messages you better really stand by them. When it's not sincere, people will smell the bullshit and drag you to hell and back. Gaga shouldn't make make a woke album just because it's trendy rn but only if that's what she really believes in.

This tbh she should make one because she actually wants to or is passionate about a certain issue and not because it’s the “in” thing. Also she’s done “woke” albums waaaaayyy before it was popular so to me she’s done more than enough already tbh :diane: I find this whole “battle to see who’s the wokest” **** soo corny

This whole "woke" thing is so pretentious... Gaga has to stay away from it. She just has to spread the same messages she ever spread.

Honestly I'm more in mood of getting a fun album by Lady Gaga. Something you can have fun on it, dance like crazy and just don't give a F.

I like her giving to Joanne so personal matter and depth. But I would love Gaga to make something a bit lighter in themes, tone and sounds for next album, just my opinion.
