Example: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?view=daily&id=starwarsdisney.htm Tracking Critical Reception: We tracked Five Foot Two, so this should be common knowledge, and while Metacritic is also used, Rotten Tomatoes is often the preferred citations for critical reception for movies. http://www.metacritic.com/movie/a-star-is-born https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/a_star_is_born_2018/ Some important terminologies: Legs - this is to movies what longevity is for music. If Million Reasons had 178,234 winds/resurrections, a movie surviving for several weekends is called "leggy" or has "several/strong legs". Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/robcain/2016/04/07/five-key-factors-that-give-movies-box-office-legs/#69952b6c736a Source: http://articles.latimes.com/2009/mar/09/business/fi-legs9 Friday Opening: Unlike music charts which track sales (and streams) immediately only at the start of Friday (past Thursday midnight), Friday Opening/Premieres include Thursday viewings. If a film has significant early viewings on Thursday night, it can contribute to an apparent massive drop for the next days simply because we're considering more than 24 hours' worth of ticket sales for just one day. DeanWinchester 41,390
For ASIB, do not expect numbers close to heavy hitters from huge franchises like the MCU or Star Wars (pre-Solo anyway, that was a bomb). What we hope to expect is to achieve good legs, as opposed to record-breaking opening gross (although that would be great, it would also be highly delusional). What can we do to ensure ASIB has good legs? Strong and good word of mouth. If we get good critical praise, it would be easier. Some framework on what we can expect: The Greatest Showman had terrible critic ratings (rotten at 56%, 6/10) but very good audience rating (87% liked it with 4.4/5 average score). https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_greatest_showman_2017/ Despite this, it had good legs. Quote The Greatest Showman earned another $3.4 million in its tenth weekend, dropping a huge (for this movie) 32% and finally acting somewhat like a normal leggy flick. That still gives the PT Barnum biopic a $160.766m domestic total. That’s still a ridiculous 18.26x weekend-to-final multiplier. Even if you count the film’s $13.4m Wed-Sun gross as its “opening weekend,” it has still made 11.99x its debut figure. Quote But going by the Fri-Sun opening, the Hugh Jackman/Zac Efron/Michelle Williams/Rebecca Ferguson/Zendaya live-action musical is now leggier than Ghost, and sits behind only Back to the Future, Fatal Attraction, Crocodile Dundee, Top Gun, Titanic and E.T. among the leggiest wide openers of all time. And, yeah, it is still running ahead of Titanic in terms of legs at this juncture. although I must assume that will soon come to an end. Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2018/02/25/box-office-hugh-jackmans-greatest-showman-is-still-leggier-than-titanic/#19aa452b2c13 I'm using this as an example because this is the most recent musical-based movie that was released and it relied a lot on good word of mouth from the viewers to survive. On the other hand, The Last Jedi, while opening really well and suspiciously had high ratings (RT: 91%, 8.1/10) (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_wars_the_last_jedi) simply kept dropping like a rock (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&view=chart&id=starwars8.htm) because of really bad word of mouth from the fanbase/viewers (RT: 46%, 2.9/5). Now take a look back at The Greatest Showman (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&view=chart&id=greatestshowman.htm) and look at how it kept rebounding even though its initial gross was weak. If ASIB can have decent-great critical acclaim and the viewers praise it enough for it to have good legs, we could have a good time tracking this, and perhaps soon after, we can track it on Gold Derby Flyin' like a 1000 Doves

DeanWinchester 41,390
Found another good list of terminologies. I forgot to add multiplier to the initial list. Multiplier: A film's total box office divided by its opening weekend box office. Another measure of the film's word-of-mouth but with a much wider range of possibilities. Films with below 2.0 are not unheard of, while 6.0 or more are a possibility. Just as a side note, not too long ago films with a multiplier of 10 or more were quite common, but the economics have changed and a big opening weekend is too important to the studios and the home market shortens a film's legs. Another good one we'll probably see: Fanboy/Fangirl Effect: Certain films and franchises have a very loyal following, usually due to their source material. Fans of these films will flock to see them as soon as they open, either over the opening weekend or, especially, opening night. This inflates box office on these days, reducing both the Internal Multiplier and the overall Multiplier for the film. Since young men tend to be the most ardent fans of major franchises, this is described as the Fanboy Effect. The incredible popularity of the Twilight franchise among young women has led to the rise of the equivalent Fangirl Effect. This is basically what happens with album and single release numbers. Arturo 40,746
I dont think Gaga’s fanbase will cause a fan effect in the beginning. If its successful it’ll be slow and steady. I know myself being a big fan can wait to watch t a week or two after premiering. More casual Gaga fans (aka the JWT type crowd) will also feel the same. We have to be careful with the contemporary releases though. If it's a crowded period, and cinemas aren't noticing good ticket sales, a movie could get pulled out earlier than planned. Which is why even though we want legs, we also want the movie to have a decent enough opening. It's tricky. Flyin' like a 1000 Doves
