US Unemployment Lowest Since 1969 & Lows For African American Unemployment

The jobless rate ticked down to 3.8% in May, another sign of the strong economy and tight labor market. 

That tied the lowest unemployment rate since 1969. Since then, the only other time unemployment was this low was in April 2000. 

"It fell for all the right reasons. We had more people coming into the labor market. We saw employers digging deeper into the pool of unemployed," said Josh Wright, chief economist at the software firm iCIMS. 

The jobs report painted a picture of an economy with opportunities for almost everyone. Black unemployment fell to a record low, and the gap between black and white unemployment shrank to the narrowest ever measured. 

Job openings are at a record high, and businesses are hungry for workers. That has helped underrepresented Americans find jobs. 

The unemployment rate among African-Americans and Asian-Americans has been steadily declining. It has also dropped among low-education workers and even teenagers. Over the past year, the unemployment rate among 16- to 19-year-olds has fallen from 14.1% to 12.8%.

Nobody who works should be in poverty part time or full time, Part time accounts for most of the entry level labor force id imagine.

Part time I'd understand depending on how many hours a person is given. When I was part time at my current job, I could get anywhere from eight to 30 hours in a week. It was up to my manager to decide 

Now that I'm in a managerial position, working 40+ hours a week and making a nice chunk of change to boot ($9.50 an hour, about a dollar over minimum wage until my next raise kicks in, then it'll be $10.50), I'm still below the line and eligible for things like food stamps and such. I think that's a bit ridiculous tbh. And I'm just a single person! There's families with two parents, both employed with jobs like mine or better, who still need assistance to feed their kids or take them to the doctor. That's insane.

But I guess that's slightly off topic, idk. I'm sitting here on my lunch break actually

I’m skeptical about the quality of jobs that are being created. I think it’s superficial. 

I like how this article tries to make it seem seem even better but stating that wages are rising, when in reality wages are no where near what they should be.  

 

And the audacity of Trump to try to take credit for this. He’s such a ****ing clown.

This. Unemployment rate is only one factor to consider. Many other measurements of the economy prove that it isn't the best it's been since the 60s

 

The unemployment rate doesn't tell you if people are working part time at McDonald's for minimum wage or at full time in high tech firm for $25/h or more making tones of money. We have to look at

 

- Labor Force participation Rate

- full-time vs partime

- median income (not average because the very wealthy artificially raise average) in relation to cost of living

 

All that counts. The unemployment rate being low is good but that's just 1 battle in building economic prosperity
