    • Nicki's success is ending. It's just "natural" (stars come and go), not cuz of Cardi

I love Nicki and I'm very fond of her career, but I must admit that she is no longer so popular. This is natural due to the age of 36 years. The young audience does not connect so much with it

Nicki is still the most important rapper of all time. She has a legacy

She's been serving the same visuals and lyrics for like the past 5 years. :rip:

Pills and Potions and No Frauds (despite more of the same old lyrics) are the standouts of her discography and she should've stuck with them as leads tbh. I think they were scrapped due to not as good chartruns.

Maybe something a bit more "mature" sounding would help her but who knows how that's gonna go.

Kim is. Let's not.

Judas is coming, let the cultural baptism begin.

Funny how people complain about how the media treat women and Gaga but here you are doing it too.

you're making this into something it's not.

This is a focus on how the industry works. It's not a Cardi vs Nicki, or a bash Nicki thread. It's a look at what factors contribute to career highs and lows.

Nicki Minaj has had a very respectable career (success wise) since 2010.

Nicki_Minaj_cropped.jpg

But here we are in 2018.

Her new single Chun-Li has had a mediocre response (chart wise).

Chun-Li (2018) *1 week in Top 10*
1st Week: #92
2nd Week: #10 - PEAK POSITION
3rd Week: #48
4th Week: #50
5th Week: #19
6th Week: #29
7th Week: #28 (still charting)

Nicki isn't getting the big features that Cardi is getting. And the ones she does, don't really do well (since "Side to Side")

This could just be a natural decline for her, but it's hard not to pull Cardi B in to this narrative.

They are literally vying for exposure and Cardi is certainly winning.

There's a new comedy show coming out and in the preview the guy says, "Nicki, when are you going to get your life back from Cardi?" And that's what got me thinking on this issue.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts and opinions on this. Is this the end of Nicki's mainstream success, a little bump, or you think she'll be fine?

Okay not to be pointed - but let's talk facts.

Y'all squirted over gaga getting a top ten for Joanne (which was still very impressive) - so why not treat Nicki's success in the same way when she bagged a top ten for her album? The response for that track has been critically very positive + just because she's not the flavour of the month 8 years into her career isn't a cause to drag her- the same way that  it wasn't a cause to drag Gaga in 2016. Success isn't always commercial - but that said she's not underperforming at all? She's heavily discussed, and her material is still heavily consumed - she's had an array of success, a catalogue of hits + Chun Li isn't any less good because it wasn't top 5?

Everybody needs to chill + stop with the "who's better" or "who's relevant" comparisons- there is room for more than one artist per genre of music (especially when men who underperform aren't ever criticised - like why is no one sounding off on say justin timberlake peaking at number 9 on his new record, compared to say drakes multiple number ones?) Y'all love Cardi? Thats awesome! But don't pit Nicki's status/success against that of a new trendy artist, as if Nicki isn't an extremely talented woman with an impressive career to her name.

She was so happy back then. Her music felt more joyful.

Now she's bitter and always defending her "throne".

The difference here is that Gaga doesn't need validation from charts to believe in her music. You can be sure she would still perform Million Reasons with all her heart even if it was a flop. Nicki postponed her album for two months just because the singles didn't perform as good as the thought it would. :rip:

As the person who made this thread. I never "squirted" over Joanne.

Yes, Chun Li is critically praised, never said it wasn't'

If we're talking facts, you have to realize that the fact is that Nicki is underperforming, so I don't know where you're drawing the conclusion that she isn't from. See below and compare singles:

This is a site based on music. Of course topics about being relevant are going to be discussed.

And you also assumed i've never disccused men's declines either, but i have:

and i've discussed the underperformance of Justin Timberlake's new singles  on threads here:

Filthy (2018)
1st Week: #9 - PEAK POSITION
2nd Week: #29
3rd Week: #33
4th Week: #51
5th Week: #34
6th Week: #90
(knocked out)

Supplies (2018)
1st Week: #71
2nd Week: #100
(knocked out)

Say Something (2018)
1st Week: #9 - PEAK POSITION
2nd Week: #17
3rd Week: #31
4th Week: #30
5th Week: #29
6th Week: #32
7th Week: #26
8th Week: #32
9th Week: #33
10th Week: #37
11th Week: #42
12th Week: #41
13th Week: #65
14th Week: #78
15th Week: #88
16th Week: #100
(knocked out)

and finally this  was not to bash or compare. It's to try to critcally understand factors of highs and lwos of careers.

Y’all need to wake up. Nicki is doing just fine! She’s selling records and she has a really great/huge fan base. Radio loves her music. Nicki and Cardi can coexist just like Gaga and Katy have been. They’re music are two very different sounds and Cardi is just starting out in the business she’s got a ways to go.

Nicki has had quite a steady decline for quite some time. I think after the whole Remy Ma thing I feel as though her career has taken a serious fall from where it used to be. She's definitely not a success like she used to be.

Spoiler

Then again she could never score a solo #1 on the Billboard charts or win a Grammy so her success was kind of meaningless anyways.

I definitely agree with this sentiment. I wish Nicki would release more songs like Pills N Potions,Your Love,Fly,and Moment For Life. Rap songs with meaning instead of the typical "I'm-a-queen-defending-my-throne" tactic. Madonna's been doing the same thing her last three albums and it's quite tiresome at this point.

Eighteen

it's just a dip in the road for her. i think she can turn it around. personally i think going back to the 2010 feel with her singles was kind of a mistake as the two singles did instantly remind me of the pink print re up but at the same time i kind of wanted something new.

i know she can provide some innovation too so that's why i'm not worried about nicki minaj. i can see her flexibility in the way she changes things up when she features in songs like swish swish or gucci mane's sweet love. nicki's part was quite good in both these songs in a more forward, less pink print, kind of way.

She's not over in my opinion. Her singles might not have done as well as Anaconda, Super Bass, Starship did but she has talent and will continue to stay. She might not be able to produce huge hits for some time but that doesn't mean she will be completely kicked off. I can't say the same about Iggy Azalea though. Nicki is a huge name in both the rap and pop game she doesn't just fade away like this.

Chun-Li is a moderate hit after all.
