The country’s parliament voted 75 to 30 to implement a law that prohibits wearing veils in public, the BBC reported. The law does not specifically mention burqas or niqabs, but it is commonly known as the “burqa ban,” according to The Guardian, and is seen as being aimed at Muslim women. The law will go into effect August 1, and fines will range from 1,000 Danish kroner ($157) to 10,000 kroner for repeated violations. Once it is in place, police will be able to tell women wearing a veil to remove it or order them to leave public places, according to Reuters. The Burqa can be a tool of religious and patriarchal subordination, but many women feel it is their own expression of commitment - religiously and in terms of respect. Is it right for a democracy to prevent that woman from her free (harmless) expression? I see the counter-argument though. There is obviously the issue that certain interpretations of the religion conflicts with Western values - and that, by extension, the burqa is therefore socially incompatible with most societies. If you're Muslim and immigrating to/living in another country, (a largely atheistic and democratic country at that), you're going to have to adapt to that culture and social environment. That means having to make a compromise. You cannot expect to move to a new place and expect everyone to accommodate your values. And it's possible to not wear a head covering and still be Muslim. A lot of these activists are not taking into account that in the West, our faces and physical appearances act as a kind of ID. Probably those problems you're talking about were caused by religion. It's not the veil, it's because you can't see who is behind the veil. If you can't cover your whole face in public, then why they can? It also represents oppression. And Nordic countries are pretty harsh with that. Accepting Burqas and Niqabs is NOT ok, at least in western European countries where oppression against women is a serious topic. Every Abrahamic religion represents oppression, and I REALLY wish they'd just vanish one day. I hope that more people across the world start to drop their religious traditions over time. It's called Stockholm Syndrome. As of 2017 the last survey showed 76% are Christinas in Denmark where did you get the largely atheist from. There is a difference between reality and what you wish . I mean, "don't ban the fashion, ban the religion," "It's called Stockholm Syndrome," "Let's say goodbye to those that only kill and make people dumb"? Really? Now look, I'm no expert in Islam, nor will I ever claim myself to be an expert in Islam, but from what I know and from what I've heard, there's a difference between women who want to wear veils and women who don't. Now obviously, if those women are being forced to wear the veils and feel that they are being oppressed, then something needs to be done to help them; however, if a woman freely wears the veil because she believes that that's what she needs to do then banning it is the exact opposite of what most of you guys are fighting for. You want these women to be "free," but fail to understand that if they want to wear the veil, you're doing a disservice to them by taking it away. Seriously, can someone help me wrap my mind around this? Again, I understand that the women being put in oppressive situations need to be helped, but if there are women out there who freely wear clothing that represents their religion, why take that away from them? Just because you disagree with it doesn't mean that you have the right to take it away. It's like me wearing a gay pride shirt that celebrates my sexuality, but then someone saying to be "Hey, we're now going to ban all gay pride shirts, so you have to take that off now."
