Trudeau Finally Resolves Pipeline Problem. Civil Trade Wars Should End

British Columbia's illegal blockage of the TransMountain Pipeline led to trade war and bans with Alberta as well as both Alberta and Saskatchewan threatening to shut off their Oil and Natural Gas supply to pressure them to stand by. Other Provinces also made strong vocal opinions though they did not take action

 

In addition it caused the arrest of 3 Politicians and a heated National debate on Authority

 

Well the Government announced this morning they would pay $4.5 Billion to Kinder Morgan to pay off the $1.1 Billion they spent so far and to buy their smaller pipeline that is in the same route.

 

The Government will now continue construction which is estimated at another $6 Billion or so and plans to sell it to another private owner once Political Opposition in BC gets resolved.

 

Some argue that rather than spending tax payers money the Government should have disciplined British Columbia and asserted it's authority. Nevertheless this may finally put an end to internal Interprovincial Hostilities.

Let's just ignore the fact that this pipeline is contrary to the intent and spirit of Paris Accord, which Trudeau signed with much trumpets and drums. My question is: what is really the so-called "national interest" in this story? I beg to differ with Trudeau on that matter. I find it extremely worrying for future generations and the environment.

Basically the argument is that the economic damage to not building another pipeline is too big but the environmental gains too small

 

Environmentalally speaking, any investment companies pull out of oil sands gets rerouted to their US shale assets which is just as bad for emissions because of flaring. It won't really reduce global oil investment. And Canada has stricter environmental regulations than Texas the capital of shale anyway

 

On the otherhand the lack of pipeline capacity is forcing Canada to accept deep discounts for Oil (Canada's oil o Ly sells for $45/barrel right now vs $66 for WTI and over $70 for Brent) which causes Government to looses billions in taxes

 

Also a lot of oil is moving by train and it's causing congestion for Grain Farmers so it's affecting agricultural sector indirectly because they have to wait forever to ship their grains

 

Edit: I forgot to mention that unlike the US, Alberta also put in a Carbon Tax as well as an emissions cap last year. That means once Oil Sands Emissions reach that threshold no new projects can be approved until companies find a way to get emissions down further.

That's ridiculous... That's a complete waste of money

Why not use those 4.5 billions to help citizens in need ? Or scholarship ? Or research ? You never see a government suddenly unlocking that much for those kind of help.

If Trudeau had some balls, no money would have had to be spent. I hope it'll affect badly his next campain.
