That's not entirely true. The Inca and Aztec ppl were pretty technologically advanced before European invasion and colonization of South America. God knows where they'd be by now. Of course having contact with Europe and the other continents would of been a massive benefit to them and could of helped them develop a lot quicker with in different aspects but it didnt need to come at the cost of literally millions of Native Americans all across both Americas (North and South). They were systematically oppressed, raped, enslaved and massacred. It's sort of indefensible.

On top of that: Europeans also burned down the library of Alexandria in Egypt and eradicated centuries of science, effectively setting back humanity by 500 years because they considered it muslim witchcraftery

It is silly to believe that Europeans were the all encompassing most knowledgable people in those times, they were actually pretty behind. They were just the most violent

Girl, the library of Alexandria is ancient and was founded way before Islam even existed and it was created by Greeks. And it's still a mystery why it got destroyed or moreover WHO it destroyed. They are some saying Caesar and some say the Arabs did that during the conquest or even someone else. Theophilus is probably the most likely who destroyed it in 391. But even that is not certain. Still earlier than Islam was founded.

Please educate yourself a bit about the ancient world before you spread things like that :rip: You can't just change the facts of history to fit your narrative.

And to your other comment. The Mongolians were cruel, so were the Arab conquest.

The Chinese were ahead of their time and so were the Greeks. You can'T just make some broad generalizations.

Well he is right,isn't he? If it wasn't for colonization North America would be technologically poor continent.But ofc colonization has its flaws and is horrible because it killed so many people.Overall if by tame he means technologically improve the continent and make it modern civilized continent then he's right.They tamed it.

You can trade technology against ressources without wiping civilizations !

Just take a look at the Roman Empire. Everything was about assimilation. Not about killing the natives and replace them with people from Rome.

What europeans did to native americans is definitely one of the biggest injustices and genocides that happened, litteraly civilizations have been swiped away for natural resources. its really saddening how it isnt portrayed as such in most history books. this historical event definitely shouldnt be praised by anybody, imo the subject should be treated the same way we treat other similar subjects like slavery, and other historical genocides.

Idk what books you had at school but ours clearly mentionned the atrocities.

Also I really don't like this narrative of "the Europeans" because not every colonizations were violent. The disparation of South American civilizations were only from Spanish and Portugueese Crowns. The North American was from British Empire. Also it doesn't justify anything but we need to remember that up to 60% of the population died because of diseases brought from European animals.

French colonization in America wasn't violent toward natives (we had wars against other colonial empires tho). We had alliances with most of the tribes there (to the point that the British called their colonial war "French and Indian War" because French and Indians were allies). After a short period where they tried to impose French to the natives, France noticed it wouldn't work and was the first nation to actually trying to learn native language instead of imposing French.

Lol that isn’t what he said at all lmfao. Way to go crazy liberals for twisting his words again just like the gang members comment 🙄. And even if he was talking about Genocide and what not literally every country did that so..... get over it. We wouldn’t be here right now if things didn’t play out the way they did so would you rather not exist....

I’m just glad we finally have a strong leader cleaning up the mess that America has become in the past several decades. #MAGA #DrainTheSwamp

That are two different things so. Spreading awareness and apologizing are two different things.

A state can apologize like Germany did. But modern Germans don’t need to apologize for the Holocaust.

Germany took responsibility for their actions. American governments at the time gave minorities Jim Crow.

I mean I agree but alot of the issues in the country today have a history behind them they didn't just start happening recently. and the way you speak about liberals is kind of just... not objective? Donald trump needs to actually do his job. if he did I would support him.

Native people have trusted white people and what have they done? Massacred them.'

You could rephrase it little better if you didn't want to look ironic and racist.

not only did they massacre them. they literally still continue to oppress them.

Nah I'm not talking about "awareness," I mean reparations, ending the war on drugs, and the school to prison pipeline. These are things the USA, and every white person in it must concern themselves with as a part of our national history.

Apologizing for ur ancestors in a way is still divisive.

Your literally viewing yourself as from a people and the others as a different people and apologizing for what your people did to another people

If we are race neutral and just view eachother as human beings, there should no longer be my ancestors did this or your ancestors did that. Unless you think biological DNA inheritance somehow makes us owe an apology to those who do not share that genetic lineage :oprah:

So I have to agree with melech

However the way Trump is saying it is the problem cuz we know full that his rationale is one of white supremacy so I'm not exactly defending him if that's what u think. I'm making a seperate point

1) We are not "race neutral" though. It's a nice ideal, and something to perhaps strive for in terms of how we treat others, but practically its not really true at all. So I disagree with the idea of not being able to (or having to) apologize for the actions of ancestors. I reject the premise of having a need for the concept of some kind of biological-social inheritance of guilt; I think you have misconstrued what people are asking for, or really want/need.

A general belief I find to be consistent with modern psychology is this; A good, meaningful apology is not only sincere and unselfish in intention, but it also carries with it a message regarding your future behavior. Reparations, and current actions to dismantle the systems of oppression that have befallen X location (America, this continent, etc.) because of our history of genocide, slavery, etc. are to me a true "apology" (and just... the right thing to do? :emma: ) This is the kind of thing that all people who benefit from the systems in place - that have the power to cause change for people hurt by these age-old actions, even individuals, should be doing. It's not so much about "my great great grandfather did this, so im saying sorry" its about acknowledging "what happened in the past was ****ed up, and while we can't change it, we can do something to 1) make life better for those still affected by it, and very importantly 2) try to ensure it does not happen again.

That being said, while I do think literally apologizing is highly ineffective, it can be symbolically important at times.

2) Clearly, not everyone here "knows" that Trump (and conservatives) use coded speech to express their support for white supremacist ideas, which is why they are defending Trump and claiming its "not what he said" when it is in effect, what he has communicated, regardless of the exact words he used. I'm not trying to argue with you, I just think its important to recognize that while some people see this as pretty clearly a gross statement overall (regardless of how you feel about guilt/blame/apologizing for the sins of your ancestors) many will still go out of their way to accept it as completely reasonable or even righteous if it fits along with their worldview :shrug:

~~~
To those people, why aren't you responding to the quotes elaborating on why they think the OP's title is fitting, and only responding to the most volatile responses :gum:
No one should apologize for what ancestors did but..oh well :emma:
that may be true but there's no need to praise either, especially if it was a bad thing
