True artists: artists who write/produce their songs, have creative input in their career.

Manufactured artists: artists who don't have any input in their music, have writing camps and have a big team of people working with them to make decisions.

So in my opinion:

True artists: Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Pink, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Beyonce (except songwriting)

Manufactured artists: Rihanna, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Drake.

Can I just ask y'all why people don't regard Beyonce as a songwriter/producer? In her album credits, she's credited as both a songwriter and producer on most of her albums.

Like did she fake it or what? The credits are very clear though.

Long but simple story. First, it has been exposed that even though Beyonce has writing credit for every song. She doesn't write them actually but just changes one or a few words and gets credits. Second, she has been sued for stealing credits many times.

Just because of Rih doesnt write most of her music doesn't mean that she's a manufactured artist. She has her own identity, and vision.

I think Selena is the best example of manufactured artist. She should keep doing acting only...or modelling...or anything but singing

The sad thing is, all of these people just want to be artists, but they just didn't hold their own in terms of becoming an independent artist. I don't agree that Rihanna is a manufactured artist, she's a modern-icon to a lot of people.

I think Beyoncé is an in-between.

I'd disagree with some of this list including Rihanna, she's not a songwriter but to say she doesn't have "any input in [her] music" or that she has a team of people making decisions for her is just false.

Since GGGB she has been pretty involved in terms of her image (she famously cut her hair short to the dismay of her record label) and sound. She is particular about how she wants to look and we have heard numerous times about how she directs her albums. She was specific about her album Loud sounding like it could only be a distinctly "Rihanna" album which is why you started hearing some reggae and Caribbean influences that has continued.

She gravitated towards an edgier urban sound, she is starting to rap more, she is working with lesser known collaborators, she has consistently pushed her sound and image in different directions.

Yeah, songwriting isn't her talent, but she isn't just jumping on any song and going any direction her label want her to go into... Dictates what she wants her songs to sound like and she curates the songs she likes.

I dislike the idea of the 'superhero' artist tbh - I think it's mostly a myth. You can be a creative, interesting, opinionated and talented singer who is a great talent - but isn't a songwriter just like you can be a brilliant songwriter who can't sing (Dianne Warren comes to mind). It's not a bad thing to delegate other talented people to work on your songs if you know that it's going to result in a better song or project. It doesn't make you a 'lesser' artist in my eyes and it doesn't make you 'manufactured' either.

As a pop artist, you will inevitably be somewhat manufactured by the music industry.

In any case, just because one artist doesn't write his/her own songs doesn't mean he/she is less talented. Artistry =/= songwriting skills. There are lots of artists who never write but have a great voice and great performance skills, just like there are lots of artist who write their own songs and make their decisions but are quite mediocre.

So let's stop with these claims. Even Gaga is more manufactured than we think, and at the same time it's a lot more interesting with a good team behind her.
