As a longtime K-Pop fan, myself (circa 2011/2012) I can honestly say I do not hate BTS, but they are nowhere near as good of a representation of the Korean pop culture scene as their fans make them out to be. For the past two years, BTS and co. have been on this crusade to break the boundaries and to establish themselves in the U.S., which I am all for. Thus said, they are not the actual first group to cross overseas nor are they the most talented or popular in Korea. If you really want to talk about legends and stars (outside of fad popularity) look up Rain, BoA, BIGBANG, Wonder Girls, Girls Generation and 2NE1. These acts have truly embodied, branded and solidified K-Pop as what it is today. I know that a majority of them are no longer performing and that one generation paves the way for those to follow and often reeps less of the reward/recognition, but BTS is not the only K-Pop group in existence nor are they the most innovative or respectable. Their talent and records broken are undeniable and deserved having been built upon the transnational phenomenon going on since the late 1980s/1990s known as the Hallyu Wave which many of the other aforementioned acts really helped solidify and build. I do not mean to rain on anybody's parade but their fandom's fascination and occult-like obsession with them is really detracting from them and their art and that's coming from this longtime K-Pop fan. Let them do what they do, but don't act like they are the only nor that there aren't acts that preceded them that are just if not more deserving or talented.
