Fusel 1,093
i feel like some people on here misunderstand (or don’t want to understand) what’s going on. no one says these women who reigned 10 years ago aren’t succesful in their own way. but the zeitgeist has shifted and the things mainstream white female pop offers atm don’t resonate with the current cultural climate. katy perry failed spectacularly at rebranding her music as ‘woke pop’. taylor swift didn’t even try and released such a bland album i couldn’t finish listening to it. it doesn’t mean white woman can’t be good at pop music atm - there are a lot of them who make incredible music - but regarding the mainstream side of things there just isn’t much integrity, let alone interesting ideas. and this is not to deny their legacy. i can appreciate them while also opening up to new things. they had their time to shine, so for now let the new artists prove themselves. as someone mentioned earlier, pop culture works cyclical

Lmao Because Gaga didn't write about this on Joanne? These artists being popular (mostly in the US) has more to do with their sound rather than their topics. Lemonade as an audio album is as political as Joanne for fvck's same, it's just the way Beyoncé and her team marketed it. This article is very vague and honestly pointless. Yes, we been knew pop girls aren't smashing anymore, but the best selling album last year was a pop album by a white male so like, yeah...
FRANK1991 3,318
"what’s popular isn’t necessarily what’s good" I like that. I like that line a lot Well, around 2015-16 is when I started to move on from radio pop towards more unknown/ new artists that put out pop songs. None of the big pop singers made any impact for me except maybe Carly Rae Jepsen with her massive critically acclaimed Emotion. Now I don't know most of the songs on BB100 (before during the 2010s I know like at least half) The new ones that are on the chart now just don't have that impact and not as big as the singers before (Gaga, Taylor Katy Adele Beyonce Rihanna ....) Cause once you let it go you better know it's gone

MelbHawker 6,583
I think R&B is what's popular at the moment. Rap has become IT again - it's laced with heavy political messages. It's like when Pop was all about love and equality. Any song with some sort of message was eaten up. Rap's at it at the moment re: black culture, America etc. Pop's become lazy and plastic over these past few years.. no-ones thirsty for it anymore. Pop music is in a coma and needs to be revived but, I'm not mad that artist like Kendrick, Donald and Beyonce are thriving. This ^ Tbh, there just haven't been solid offering. Gaga and Miley turned their back on pop and took a country turn. Katy tried to be experimental. Taylor tried to seem rebellious and came across as try-hard. And Madonna and Britney, just... I think Gaga sees this, and hopefully brings back some of the glamour, edge, and eccentricity that made her a superstar. It kind of feels like the pop girls are lost, and trying too hard. Ariana is the only one getting it right atm.

DiscoHeaven23 35,007
The quotes you've provided are SO INSIGHTFUL really made me think. I think we go towards music and entertainment for escapism. The has resulted in music trends being counter to the status quo. So it makes sense that hip-hop has become major during the Trump years, just like it was during the W. Bush years.
