Economy 52,842
https://www.google.ca/amp/vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/ian-mulgrew-pipeline-deadline-too-ambitious-trans-mountain-constitutional-case-hears/amp http://lethbridgeherald.com/commentary/opinions/2018/04/21/constitutional-crisis-threatening-canada/ The last year saw trade wars in Western Canada with wine bans, ripped up electricity agreements and Alberta and Saskatchewan Threating to cut off oil and natural gas to BC in retaliation for BC meddling against a National Project that was important to both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Not surprisingly the Federal Government has not done much to resolve their bickering. But that has become the custom. BC might just once again prove that the Federal Government rarely gets the last say on what happens to the Nation Recently Provinces have forced the Federal Government to make changes to Retirement system (CPP) by threatning to make their own like Quebec, and some Provinces like Saskatchewan are making Trudeau's Carbon Tax hard to implement For years the Federal Government wasted no time debating minimum wages or most labor laws as it has become clear Provincial Governments will do what they want to do and make the Federal Government's life difficult when they do not agree with a decision. Businesses are complaining that it's easier to trade with a US State than another Province because NAFTA at least forces a uniform standard. But within Canada's borders, each Province does their own thing and makes trade a hassle.
Porthos 168
And i thought German states were messy This is like Germany 150 years ago! That really states the biggest problem of feederal states. The central government has no power and the states do like they please
Economy 52,842
Here's an Interesting one: Man from the Province of New Brunswick charged for buying liquor from Quebec after making a trip to buy in bulk because beer is cheaper in Quebec https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4175314 Madness. We need unity like in Europe. @Florian@Luc Edit: more Centralized countries. I'm not talking about the European Union

The European Union is like Canada with 700 million people I didn't so much mean the Union as I meant each Nation Aren't most European countries more Centralized? I know in Portugal where I used to live the Federal Government would make a decision and end of story and districts had to abide. Regions only controlled little things Here in Canada Provinces have a lot of power to challenge the Federal Government or find loop-holes in the system to essentially try to not follow the law when they don't agree For example technicaly the Federal Government was supposed to approve the pipeline and they did. BC has found loop-holes to block it by witholding construction permits and intentionally delaying "environmental assessments" that shouldn't take as long as they have to try to get the Corporation to cancel the project on their own Saskatchewan has prevented a National Carbon tax law from taking effect And the trade wars like banning wines or shutting off oil and gas to your neighbouring province is just outright illegal But the Federal Government has a hard time controlling anything because Provinces refuse to yield when they don't agree and it's causing dysfunction Each region is operating their own way. The Federal Government still makes some National Decisions but that's provided Regions don't strongly disagree and find a way to block the feds plans Also blackmailing the Fed to make changes on retirement system by threating to make your own is just something that never should of happened
Fish 6,259
Our federal pact is one of distribution of powers and of equality between the provinces and the federal state. The Federal government should not interfere in provincial powers, pursuant to the Constitution and the idea of federalism itself, besides some exceptions. Civil rights and the right to regulate commerce and alcohol lie with the provinces. In such a big country, of course there will be disagreements between regions. BC does not have the same economy as Quebec, for example. The thing is, provinces and federal government have to work together in partnership and in a cooperative federalism, for the good of Canadians. The Courts are usually a very good place to decide on those matters, since they are of constitutional law essence. Personally, I would be very suspicious about any more power given to the federal government, which is already very powerful, and enjoy a large "spending power" to insert itself in provincial powers and matters. Porthos 168
@Economy When we consider countries, your right. Even Germany's states aren't able to do something like this. It's just sad to se the central government of an independend country struggle against some pesky states

That's fine I get that confederation the way it was written and evolved gave Provinces many powers But they are far too often going beyond their jurisdiction and without discipline. -BC cannot block a federally approved project but they are finding creative ways to do it anyway -Alberta was not allowed to ban BC wines in retaliation -Alberta and Saskatchewan are not allowed to cut off oil and gas to BC to retaliate. Its even more illegal than what BC is doing because at least BC is finding loopholes in the system to do what they are doing. And then there's stuff that isn't illegal per say like Ontario and a few other Provinces (I forget which ones) having Threatened to make their own retirement systems if the Federal Government didn't enhance it like they wanted it too. Making your own supplement doesn't break any law that I'm aware of, but ethically I question that kind of blackmail you could almost call it

Screwed up hydro system giving us crazy rates, ted tape on everything like permits making even desperately needed stuff like construction to help housing shortage slower and more difficult than it needs to be... And let's not even get Into the finances. It's rediculous that even a few years ago we were running bigger deficits than the Federal Government But that's a little off topic. I just felt like ranting cuz the Ontario Government is so dysfunctional
