"Madonna stopped being interesting 15 years ago"

The Bling

So; one of the biggest (if not the biggest) newspaper in Spain, El País, published this article yesterday making some points about Madonna's career. Here you can read full:

https://elpais.com/elpais/2018/05/07/tentaciones/1525689856_112385.html

Here I translated the key parts:

"A decade and a half ago Madonna decided to tell the world about what she thought about her career during the 80s and the notorious american dream in an album. And it almost made her lose her career. She knew this dream very well, she'd lived if for more than 20 years: she conquered the world musical industry"

"Madonna has always taken really seriously her album themes: she went from being a zen geisha, to a disco country star to a pop rebel in five years time. She was then enraged by all those unfair events and the messages in her songs proved it: "What is all I've got worth for?, I've been so stupid for relying on the material stuff, Hollywood is a vain illusion, I'm famous yet nobody knows me, true love will take me far and I deserve the stuff I've worked my sweat and tears for". Fame, the loss of her mother, struggles and mother-child love, themes she'd already treated but condensed into one album. Never before had she sounded more authentic and bare"

"She failed on sales though: Hollywood was her first single not to enter the Billboard list. The album only sold 5 million copies all around the world; a big stepback from her 15 million copies sold on Music, or 20 million on Ray Of Light, her previous works. No effort could revive this album throughout 2003, neither her smooches with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on the MTV Awards, nor her overly sweet music video for Love Profusion, where a housewife average type of Madonna could save the album from flopping"

"Even so, Madonna learnt from her mistakes. The idea of creating a succesful product based on her political and social views didn't work on her favor, so she's never worked on any ambitious project since. Her post-American Life work, Confessions on a Dancefloor in 2005, brought back the fun and apolitical self from her beginning. She slowly went back to her place. [...] There was no room for experimentation. And there are no signs of them yet. But in 2018 she's brought Mirwaïs back to work in songs for her next album. Her first Trump- era album. Should we expect a new American Life?"

So what do you think? :emma: Some obvious points were made, but I feel like it'd trying too hard :poot: I'm always here for some American Life vindication anyway :diane::diane::diane:

I agree. Confessions On A Dance Floor was toned down, Hard Candy was not outrageous at all, MDNA was a response to Gaga's sound and Rebel Heart was a response to Born This Way's message.

Judas is coming, let the cultural baptism begin.

10, not 15 years. American life and COADF were still interesting. I'd say she's been flopping since Hard candy

Hard Candy had 4 Minutes which was a huge hit (and her last)

There's nothing bad about American Life. I'm praying her next album will be something like that. After 10 years of mediocrity (for Madonna's standards), we deserve it.

Omg, I read this article just yesterday. I think he made several points but that title is total flamebait and misleading. Doesn't surprise me coming from that newspaper tho:triggered:

Yet Hard Candy failed to outsell ARTPOP, even though Hard Candy was released in 2008

It’s funny because Madonna started playing it safe just at the same time Gaga exploded (late 2008).

If i can be honest for a second, i like at least three or four songs on every Madonna album. I don't like a single song on American Life. Die Another Day is a Autotune mess, Hollywood is sooooo boring and American Life, oh American Life. I like that she opposed Bush back then but her music was really awful.

"there are some points they has made"

but another AL will not work comercially speaking , especially now:emma: , however she can do it right this time and create a great body of work that appeal to critical acclaim
