Iowa Governor To Sign 6 Week Abortion Ban

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) said on Friday that she planned to sign a measure that would ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, setting up the strictest limitations on abortion in the U.S.

In a statement, Reynolds said she would sign the bill in her formal office in the Iowa state capitol. 

The legislation is certain to prompt legal battles. Shortly after Reynolds's office announced the governor's intent to sign the so-called heartbeat bill, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland said that it would file a lawsuit seeking to block the bill.

Hopefully the Supreme Court rules this unconstitutional, very scary for the women of Iowa Every women deserves her choice and most women don't know at 6 weeks they are pregnant!

Depends, some 8 weeks, some 12 weeks, some 3 weeks, it all depends on the woman. 

This law will only increase unsafe abortions that can kill women and cause infections, every woman deserves her choice.

I know it's not a popular opinion and I'll probably get dragged for this but I still dunno how I feel about abortions

 

Like at what point does it become unacceptable ethically? Is it when they feel? When they can hear? Is it once their out of the womb and recognize different people's touch?

 

Obviously a sperm and egg are just cells but at what threshold does it cross into a human being? 

 

I mean Im not the type that would judge or look down on a woman who did it especially if she's in a hard situation. At the end of the day we have to make our own choices and bear our burdens

 

But it's not a topic I'm comfortable in. Especially the opinion some have that the father doesn't get any say.

 

If my fiance and I had an unplanned preganancy even tho as the carrier of the child it kind makes sense her will would take a heavier weight I know if still get upset if she killed my child without at least partially considering how I feel about it

I think there's another problem to this bill entirely.

While I didn't read the link, I'm assuming no exceptions will be made, which will be a problem for those who are having children who are products of rape. Or unplanned accidents or "miracle" children who somehow manage to be born despite childbirth. Or women who don't want to have kids because they can't take care of them or they're druggies.

Not that I support wanton abortion, but that child is not asked to come into the world, and secondly, the foster system is sh!t. Enough of a shithole where abortion is a better option sometimes.

There is extenuating circumstances. Always.

This should be unconstitutional, along with other attempts at the de-facto illegalization of abortion. The "six week" distinction is entirely arbitrary and based on the idea that a "heartbeat" can be detected around this time. Ultimately and logically however, abortion at any stage in the development of a fetus is equally as controversial. Are fetuses literally children from conception? Is it when they have a heartbeat? Is it when they can feel pain and think? Is it when they are survivable outside of the womb? Or is it only when they are born, by definition of "child"? Regardless of what your thoughts on the subject are, no where along this process does this implication invalidate the very valid, moral and practical reasons that safe, unfettered access to abortion for women and people with uteruses should be universal. If we as a society believe that individuals should have agency and control over not only their own bodies, but their lives - as we generally do, then the exception made for abortion of fetuses is contradictory  People should be able to decide how to live their lives in a way that is best for them. The optics of framing it as "murder" or 'killing of a child" is not only unscientific, its propagandized. The fetuses potential life ends there is no disputing this, but it is a choice to spread propaganda, lies, fake images (both literal and mental) and to disseminate misinformation in order to arouse disgust and disdain in people and rally them over to their side  It's never easy, its never about ending the fetuses growth, etc.

And there's another distinction we should make;

Abortion has always existed, and will always exist. Banning abortion or criminalizing it only prevents safe, practical abortion. It will persist, as human beings time and time again exert a will to decide their own futures.

Since one girl i know was pregnant a full 9 months without ever knowing it i can def say its different for everyone  she woke up in the middle of the night and went to the hospital as her bed was wet and they told her she was giving birth

I often point to Canada in regards to abortion regulation (or lack of )and its repercussions thanks sis

The majority of women have irregular periods. They can easily go six weeks between periods or skip a month. Many women are closer to six weeks to two months pregnant when they discover they are pregnant. 

Even then, it usually takes a few weeks to have discussions, get advice or counseling and make arrangements for a decision such as this. Most women don't make this decision and schedule a medical procedure in a week. It is a something that is usually discussed with a significant other, trusted mentor/friend or a therapist, counselor...and then take some time to think about the options.
