A Nobel Prize for Trump?

There seems to be many factors that led to this meeting, the pressure from the U.S absolutely contributed - but Trump doesn't deserve much more praise than that.

- The South Korean government has been working towards this for a long time - they even campaigned on this.
- Experts are saying China's action and increased sanctions have been the change really pushed this forward.
- North Korea is in a position it hasn't been in before, they have a ICBM missile capable of launching nukes to the U.S. They feel like they are in the best position they can be in to negotiate.

^ Those three factors have contributed far more to these talks than Trump has and the list isn't really in order.

The problem we face now is point #3. The U.S no doubt want the denuclearisation of North Korea - it's always been their major issue with North Korea.

It seems as though the United States thinks they have the upper hand due to the harsh sanctions placed on North Korea and believe NK is in a chokehold from sanctions that they will offer to lift if North Korea end and dismantle their nuclear program. North Korea likely sees things differently... They are thinking they have the upper hand with their ICBM nukes, they believe they will be able to get sanctions lifted by offering to place limitations on their nuclear capabilities, but they do not want denuclearisation.

All North Korea want is to consolidate power. Nukes are their safety net, anybody ****s with North Korea and boom there goes Japan and South Korea! The ICBM that can reach the U.S and Australia is unnecessary for them - the risk any country faces in trying to take down North Korea is already too great. But what the ICBM have provided is this "trump" card. North Korea now believe they might be able to become more 'legitimate' in a way in the world arena. Before they'd test nukes, the world would be in an uproar, the world would place harsh sanctions on North Korea. They are hoping for a scenario now where they avoid those sanctions - North Korea wants to agree to terms that allow them to keep enough of their nuclear arsenal so that they are safe while granting the ability for them to participate in the global economy.

If they succeed during those negotiations it would put them in a far better position than they were during the Obama era. They would have all the nukes they used to have, with none of the sanctions. Really it's the further development of North Korea's nuclear arsenal that has led us to this moment, they believe the ICBMs have given them the upper hand in negotiations so they have finally agreed to negotiations. 


So the short answer is no.... I don't think Trump deserves a nobel peace prize... While he deserves a minimal amount of credit, I think other factors outside of his influence have contributed far more to this moment happening. If Trump manages to actually negotiate the denuclearization of North Korea then we might actually have a conversation, but I'm skeptical of that happening mostly because that's not what NK wants and they feel like they have the upper hand. 

I'm skeptical of the best scenario (denuclearisation of NK) actually happening. I think the scenario we are going to see is business as usual, no lifting of sanctions and North Korea walks away with its nuclear arsenal intact. While that doesn't sound like the greatest solution - I think that's a better scenario then the lifting of sanctions and the scale back of North Korea's nuclear program because that just puts North Korea in a better position than they were a couple years back.

He apparently didn’t do much. This is big but can we avoid giving him a goddamn Nobel prize ? This is clearly a reach : “something good that is slightly related to him happened, let’s give him a Nobel prize just to contradict liberals”.

If he cures world hunger then so it shall be but I think we could avoid idolizing him just to make a woke, non-PC decision.

Him indirectly making this happen doesn’t make him less of an asshole

I will commend Trump on encouraging this if that talk he had with North Korea's leader helped this on. But not Nobel Peace worthy yet... Maybe if he terminates his twitter account...

if this goes through, he'll probably get it. i can't say right now whether or not he deserves it but i can't deny that he did put pressure on china in regards to NK and did put more sanctions on NK on top of that, and people are saying that kim jung un is motivated (at least partially) because NK's economy is in shambles. additionally, it's unclear whether trump's erratic behavior and unpredictability, his show of military force in syria, had any sway in the recent turn in korean politics. it seems plausible to me. whatever the case, this is a win for trump, and i'll give him that. (but he's still a terrible president overall).

It wasn't even pressure. You see, the reason that NK and SK are making progress right now, is because their two countries are doing diplomatic work. The Olympics, the visit to SK, not to mention China's hand with the meeting Xi had with Kim, all of that was separate from Trump's insults and twitter rants.

But, to be frank, Kim is probably just using this to stall and get money and food. The sanctions are really hurting, they did the same thing in 1994 to Bill Clinton, and just a few years later we found out they were lying. Bill got the peace prize then, and it turned out to be unworthy, so I doubt they're gonna consider giving Trump one right away, because it could all be a fluke.

Anyone that says he deserves one right now, are not keeping up to date, and should step out the dialog.
