Gay 1,370
anybody can use imagery from Ancient Egypt because that civilisation no longer exists cultural appropriation is when you appropriate from civilizations and cultures that still exist in the present (ie japanese culture, indian culture, native american culture, present egypt culture etc)
Bebe 17,067
African Americans who are descendants of slaves had their specific cultures erased. They were forced to assimilate and they lost their religions and cultures. Many African Americans find that embracing their "Africaness" and "blackness" in opposition to the standard of "whiteness" that has been forced upon them is a way to reclaim some power and live authentically. Let's not get it twisted and act like people are going to call appropriation if Katy dressed up like she was in Ancient Greece - that's a European country full of white people. People aren't pissed at Beyonce dressing up like she is in Ancient Egypt because it's an African country and she is paying homage to a powerful black civilisation and using historically black references, rather than usual 'white' references to power (such as European royalty), to communicate strength and power. Some people didn't like Katy dressing up as an Ancient Egyptian because Ancient Egyptians have consistently been portrayed by white europeans, white washing the achievements and influence of civilisations and societies that were led by people of colour. DelusionalGaga 29,579
Because Beyoncé. That's the answer. No one will drag her or call her out on anything because she can do nothing wrong on her astronomically high pedestal. She could literally go onto the Coachella stage and burp for 90 minutes and people would still say she's a Goddess.

Don't want to turn it into a discussion about Katy and I wasn't even trying to come for her - I was just pointing out the obvious difference between Beyonce using African imagery to depict herself as some kind of African queen and Katy Perry using African imagery to depict herself as some kind of African queen. Beyonce using historically black and African references in her work is different from a white artist using those references

Excuse me but this is wrong on all terms. First of all, ancient Egyptians (as well as ancient Romans and Greeks) were white. Not as white as people are today, but surely not black. And not because we wanna picture them that way, but because they actually were, it's history. Secondly, even if we consider that ancient Egyptians were black, they cannot be considered a black civilization with today meaning: the fact that they were black, if they were, in no way influenced they're possibilities to build the greatness they build, because the exploitation, submission and discrimination of people of color is recent, it began when European countries started to colonize African and Indian countries - and it eventually became harsher wit the the discovery of America in the 15th century. So, no, she didn't pay homage to a powerful black civilization, she didn't empower black people by dressing and referring to the Egyptian culture, as well as Katy didn't. No one should bash her either - I do NOT believe in cultural appropriation at all - but let's just not defend her on some fake historical basis, let's just not. It's more than just skin colour. I emphasised "Africanness" as well as "blackness" for a reason. As mentioned, African Americans have had their culture and religion essentially stripped from them and have been forced to assimilate to white society. Many find it empowering to find influence and power from within Africa and look to examples of power, strength, culture, values that are African rather than European. Many artists of African descent would, understandably, rather find and use African/Black references and depictions in their work. A community held down under white supremacy, with their culture stripped of them, would sometimes rather use African references to royalty to express power and strength then present those ideas using references to European royalty. "The fact that they were black, if they were, in no way influenced they're possibilities to build the greatness they build," Nobody is saying anything like this so simmer down. Like that's just stretching my 'argument' to ridiculous proportions. Literally that entire paragraph was just a bizarre rant and was in no way related to anything I've said I don't think you understood what I wrote so I don't see the point in replying properly tbh.
