Like you said, I think the immediate worst case scenario here would be a Cold War type deal with a lasting effect on our relations with Russia. Of course it could snowball into something else if we decide to go further than this but as it stands, let Putin be salty tbh.

Our world peace depends on US military hegemony and that's why the US keeps growing its defence budget more and more.

Basically you would need the entire top 20 countries in term of military budget to equal the US budget. And with those 20 countries would everyone act against the US ? I doubt.

EXACTLY! People also seem to forget that most of Russia's "strength" is smoke and mirrors. Wasn't it struggling militarily a few years ago? It's strength in the literal militaristic sense has dwindled. Ppl seem to still associate Russia with it's former glory days as the USSR and forget that those days are gone. Russia could never do something as ambitious as going head to head with the US anymore. Sanctions and even proxy wars might be likely but a full out attack on the US & its allies? No way Jose.

Russia still has the weapons and firepower that the USSR had, that's why it's still a relevant actor. You're underestimating this country way too much

It might still have the weapons from those days but it hasn't advanced all that much compared to it's competitors. A lot of it's weaponry is also potentially dated. I think ppl are overestimating Russia's strength a little too much. It isn't even close to being a  "counterpart" to the US's militaristic might (as much as it likes to paint itself as being such).

Russia won't act because it isn't strong enough to take on the US and isn't prepared to handle all the aftermath of an attack (both financially & politically). Simple as that.
