I had this new confidence and I think that even though my story is completely different, there were certain elements that I definitely resonated with, and that MANY will resonate with. Great writing, entertaining even for those who don't relate at all, talented actors, fun soundtrack- I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't watch a lot of films, but this one takes the cake for me You're a teen and it's a still movie. That's the whole purpose.

The story doesn't have much conflict, the main character has no charisma, it's very bourgeois. I have to agree. Some sweet moments, but I mean... Simon claims he "just like us" while his parents present him with an SUV for his birthday And also... Spoiler he caves very quickly in agreeing to manipulate his friends just to keep himself in the closet. AND the film closes with him pressuring Blue to come out publically as well. Just strikes me as questionable

NotDoctor 704
I'm so happy to see other people enjoying it; I haven't really seen too many other people talking about it. It's definitely got it's issues - like 100% not addressing or handling class/race in relation to coming out/queerness - but I thought it was really special. I'm also an affluent, white, gay guy so it was sort of aimed directly at me. Without the blackmailing angle, it weirdly mirrored my coming out/first boyfriend (now husband) and I've never seen anything like that before in mainstream media. I think it's really powerful to see this stuff and it did fairly well so I hope we'll see more films in this vein soon (hopefully whatever comes next is less upper-middle class, white, gay, male centric though). I got a tattoo of the word "exhale" after seeing it a few times partially inspired by that scene cuz that moment hit me like a ****ing dump truck. So maybe I'm just an easily impressionable blind stan Also I'm 26 so it definitely isn't just teens who it emotionally resonates with. The soundtrack is pretty great too js Edit: Also can I just complain about how god awful the marketing was? I wanted to burn those ****ing posters that said something about "form a line, but it doesn't have to be straight!" God that is pandering bullshit. And the whole "I'M JUST LIKE YOU" nonsense is trite and ridiculous, they can **** right off with that. I only went to see it the first time because a friend forced me to, completely expecting to hate it because of how pedestrian the movie looked in trailers/posters/etc.
