Moebius 8,965
The only reason MR became a success is because of the Superbowl. She promoted it to oblivion only to flop to oblivion. The only song that could've done some moderate success as a lead single would've been the infamous Dancing in Circles, but even that would've ruined the whole "stripped down" mood of Joanne, so tbh she had few choices to begin with for a lead single. I love PI but seriously, a lead single, the ma ma pa pa pa perfect illusion could have charted higher. Well it was supposed to be the second single and yet she scrapped it for a reason :p
Married the Night 3,955
I totally agree. Or A-yo. But the name would have ruined any chances of A-yo being a hit.

This. The only songs with any real potential to do well on radio were A-Yo, Million Reasons and Dancin’ in Circles. Joanne might have gone top 30 too ifradio supported it (and they ditched the long piano version), but realistically speaking those three were the only real hopes for successful singles. The album wasn’t like ARTPOP were every other song sounded radio ready. Dancin in Circles would’ve, as you say, given the wrong impression if they went with it for the lead. It’s the most obvious choice for a pop hit, but isn’t the best representation of the album as a whole. Million Reasons as the lead would’ve alienated a lot of fans who’d waited years for gaga to come back, so that had to be ruled out too. The only real option for the lead was A-Yo. It’s catchy, radio ready, and would’ve been a softer introduction to the country aesthetic than Million Reasons. Why they went with Perfect Illuison that has none of those traits is beyond me. I agree with the songs but not with the chronological order tho.. DIC feat. RiRi should've been the lead with a killer video. Ayo for the album release MR for the SB John Wayne for Coachella. John Wayne doesn't have the 'it' thing to be a hit imo, but for sure is the best song on the album and the best thing to come out of the era (along with the SBHS, Coachella and the tour. )

Phlop 4,773
1. A-YO (Smokin’ Em All) - lead 2. Million Reasons - 2 weeks before album 3. John Wayne - Super Bowl 4. Dancin’ In Circles - Coachella 5. Diamond Heart - 5F2 and tour video 6. Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Going) - Grammys 2018 I don’t think DH and Joanne should be legit singles (like promoted or sent to radio), but they should’ve had videos and would’ve made the era feel complete. but if she actually promoted Perfect Illusion, things could’ve been different.
