Economy 53,089
https://www.bnn.ca/insurance-company-uncovers-pervasive-auto-body-shop-scams-urges-action-1.1024202 A Canadian Insurance company (Aviva Canada) decided to make a study where they purposely crashed cars (not against other drivers) and had hired investigators pretending to be average joes in need of repairs. They hid cameras in their crashed cars to see their work step by step and what they discovered was shocking - Some companies charged for new parts but put in used parts - some automechanics made up work that wasnt needed and charged for work not done - One company charged for some kind of towing and storage that did not happen - 9 out 10 machanics were found to perform some degree of fraud or another. - Estimated cost of repairs vs charge suggests a 50% premium that should not be there
Economy 53,089
On a side note 7 years ago I had a really minor accident where I rear ended a guy. My car was not damaged and his only had the bumper a little popped out cuz the plastic clips broke which is all that needed to be changed The first mechanic only put glue and we found out 3 days later when it popped back out and he didn't give me a full refund Then we were both missing work so we decided to go to a dealer... They charged me for paint in his car (there was no scratches on the bumper or dents) and they charged me 29 hours of labor Cost me $1700 at dealer to fix a bumper with no dent that only needed clips + the money I didn't get back from first mechanic
