Greece did it I'm happy that more and more European countries are running surpluses... but on the other hand those surpluses only make the trade surplus bigger, and they're already damagingly big. And as for unemployment in the US... I hope more people enter the labor market as a result of low unemployment. Are the secondary labour conditions improving? E.g. making it more difficult to fire employees? That could make the next crisis hit less hard. I said "practically" unheard of as in rare. And harder to fire ppl I'm not sure that's good long term. It is not good for productivity if companies feel they have to waste resources on labor they do not require. Also makes it harder to replace workers if a worker is not performing well It may help unemployment short term but long term policies to make it hard to fire ppl don't bode well for raising standard of living in my opinion
gabeoz 7,915
Do people think this is good? It may be good in the short term, but It’s just setting us up for a really bad recession

No. At-will employment is the rule. And unions are basically nonexistent in most industries (11% of the working population is in a union). And most states have "Right to Work" laws, making unions toothless. In 2016, the company I worked for let 40 people go at 5:00 pm on a Friday, two weeks before Christmas, with no warning. Pissed me off so much, I decided to find another job. It's a job-seeker's market, so I got out quite easily (and I'm much happier!). As soon as the tide shifts... people are going to be hurting. I agree that 2 weeks is very uncaring and selfish on the part of companies and in that respect ppl should be given more time to prepare and start looking for another job But at the same time many seem to look down on firing in general... Companies shouldn't have to keep more labor than they need that does not help the economy in the long term... If a company finds a way to produce with less labor, the cost of a product drops, and the fired people eventually find another job to be productive in, and economic productivity overall rises It's never good for the ppl who loose their jobs at the time. But higher productivity with less labor is the reason standard of livings have risen since the industrial revolution

I agree in principle that if a company doesn't want to employ someone, they shouldn't be forced to. But in practice, your employer has too much control over your life (I'm speaking as an employed US person). It's a subtle kind of tyranny. I don't have any idea how to fix that, but it sucks. In the sense that some bosses can be a**holes or be unreasonable I agree that's a problem. They don't always care about their employees as human beings I was speaking more in the sense of the contract itself. Companies are companies not charities so if a company no longer needs as much labor, them trimming down is not something that ppl should look down on It was more that I was referring to. The economy does not benefit if we use more resources and labor to produce an item than we really have to. Our standard of living would stall if we started enforcing anti firing rules Of course with changes in technology education programs is vital. A big issue most Countries face is a skills mismatch problem. Jobs are becoming more technical and you need training for them... The problem is many jobs have a shortage of people because ppl don't qualify for them. Neither businesses nor average citizens benefit from that as companies can't find enough workers for some positions and some people can't find good paying jobs! imnotyourbabe10 6,120
I suppose many forget the terrible **** he has said (on his campaign, throughout his life and as Not My President). Scary how some people get a hard on about the economy, jobs, N. Korea but fail to recall his inhumane circus of a life and treatment of others. Not to mention the books authored by psychologists and social scientists who are very concerned about his "stable genius." Perhaps the failing to recall is a result of 24/7 news; technology at fingertips; and peoples self-absorbed nature in their own lives. [Capitalism is a part of the problem, too, ya'll. For the sake of jobs, for example, people will applaud Mango Mussolini]. Keep protesting! Stay woke! EDIT: He's also a terrible businessman (not that we all want this country ran as a business). Clinton got a Bee-Jay for (practically) free and 45 paid 130k. NOT GOOD! SAD!
Retron 2,605
Something only tangentially related... This s*** is so dumb. The jobs number was covered on every outlet all day, as was the market rally. I got three push notifications the moment the numbers came out. Like wtf. Trump-world does this "the media isn't covering this!" stuff all the time, when you'd see that isn't true if you looked literally anywhere. They treat their followers like complete idiots.
