The Oscars are Homophobic/Transphobic.

I'm not going in to the issue here, because I agree with both sides and my brain hurts.

In 1970, for the movie adaptation of Gore Vidals Mary Breckinridge about the real life transgendered nurse, trans Candy Darling auditioned for the lead. When the role went to Raquel Welch instead Candy remarked that Welch  was 'a much more believable transsexual' than herself.

Well you kind of just proved yourself wrong with your last sentence.

They are paying dust to movies with lgbt backgrounds. I'm not just talking about gay movies here; They don't nominate lgbt actors for playing straight roles in straight movies either.

Also also for example, Call Me By Your Name DOES NOT have a gay background. It is based off a book written by a straight man, the screen adaptation that turned it into a movie was written by a straight man, and it stars two straight men. Please tell me how this movie has a gay background. That is not an acknowledgement of the lgbt community. That is straight people taking lgbt stories, adapting them and then not allowing lgbt actors to portray that story. Not only that, but then these people are rewarded by getting an oscar nomination.

For the record, the man who adapted the screen play for Call Me By Your Name, James Ivory, is gay. The director of Call Me By Your Name, Luca Guadagnino, is also openly gay. And the Best Original Song nominee for Call Me By Your Name was written and performed by Sufjan Stevens, a gay man.

Multiple gay artists won Oscars tonight. The Oscar for Best Adapted Screen play was won by a gay man, James Ivory. The directors/producers of CoCo, Adrian Molina and Adrian Molina, both thanked their same-sex partners in their speeches. A trans-woman and a lesbian were both presenters. The host made a joke about our Vice President's internalized homophobia. The award for Best Foreign Film went to A Fantastic Woman, the story of a transgender woman. One of the Best Original Song nominees, Sufjan Stevens, is gay and was on stage singing about Alexander The Great and his male lover. Janet Mock, a the famous trans-activist, was on stage during Common's performance. The film that won Best Picture features a positive representation of a gay man, for which the actor was nominated. A gay love story was nominated for Best Picture. All of this comes after Moonlight winning the Oscar for Best Picture the previous year.

That doesn't sound like a homophobic award show.

Ridiculous and retweet-seeker.

Moonlight won Best Movie last year.

Call Me By Your Name was nominated for several categories and won one.

Sam Smith won last year.

Over the last few years LGBT themed movie and LGBT people have won oscars.

Seriously, stop.

I get what you’re saying but....

There are a lot of films with LGBT directors and cast. They may not all be nominated for the Oscars, but The film industry is so much more than the dozen or so films nominated for these awards.

I love Luca’s works and Guillermo’s. Almadovar and Ozon. Mira Nair and Wong Kar Wai. There’s so much more to see and appreciate and we shouldn’t take the Oscar noms as validation for the quality of films. Neither should we take a director’s or cast’s sexual identity as a measure of the quality or authenticity of the stories told.

This wouldn't be an issue if they casted LGBT people for roles depicting LGBT people :oprah:

How are so many people on a website made up almost entirely of gay men this intentionally blind to homophobia?

And who isn’t LGBTphobic these days? That’s just a mirror of everyday's life.

This is so out of control now. The Oscars award movie excellence regardless of any trivial things like what the nominees look like/what country they come from/what genitalia they have/who they are attracted to. If those who tick all the boxes of the status quo are making the best movies, so be it. That's fairer than any sort of special initiative pushing for diversity because then people end up nominated who wouldn't otherwise get there. Personally, I feel offended at the concept of me being from an oppressed group is what won me a nomination or an award. I want to get there based on my own merits and nothing else.

I see your point very clearly. However, the point that was originally being made is that the Oscars never recognize any LGBT people in the four main acting categories. Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress are the ones that people mainly pay attention to.

It's amazing that the Oscars pay attention to LGBT media, but it seems that they don't deem it worthy enough to nominate LGBT people in acting categories. Instead we get to be the people in the shadows, the writers, the producers etc; we never get celebrated for being out an proud in-front of the camera.

As much as I have remembering, Sam Smith won a couple of years ago, and Call Me By your Name is literally nominated for Best Picture...

even if CMBYN is not made by gay people it’s still an LGBT film. If the Oscars were truly homophobic why would they even bother with it?

Because if CMBYN was made by gay people and starred gay people then The Oscars probably wouldn't have paid any attention to it or nominated it. The post isn't just about a lack of LGBT people in the industry or being nominated at the Oscars, it's also about how they reward straight people for playing gay characters, hen they never nominate gay actors for playing gay characters. Do you see what I mean?
