Trump says that trade wars are good and a big win for America as he plans a 25% import tax on steel

Economists say higher import costs on raw materials like steel is likely to kill more manufacturing jobs like in auto industry (as the US manufacturing costs becomes more uncompetitive) than the jobs created by more domestic steel production

Does he know higher deficit spending will only make problem worse?

When a government puts more money into the economy than it takes in taxes it is capitalizing the economy to afford to buy more stuff than in produces.

Governments fiscal balance affects trade balance to a large extent especially over a longer term. It isn't just trade deals

Even a productive competitive Nation will consume more than it produces if the Government is Capitalizing the system with stimulus

Deficit = demand stimulus

Surplus = tightening

But instead of the central bank that does it with monetary policy (interest rates, money supply), the Government does it directly with how much it takes and spends

...

He still doesn't understand what a trade deficit is so I'm pretty sure if you tried to explain anything in your post to him, his eyes would gloss over and he'd start thinking about much more important stuff.

What he doesn't get is the US Government fuels this not trade deals

The US employs hundreds of thousands of soldiers. This excessive amount of labor on military causes a problem because these people have to eat and consume goods too but they do not industrially produce anything

Also as I said, Government deficits have a tendency to lead to trade deficits also long term (short term other factors also play a role) for the simple fact that if you put more money into economy than you take from it, you put more purchasing power of consumption into it than it has the ability to produce from the private sector

Both these factors the US Government has brought on itself... It cannot be blaming other Countries for its own mistakes

Canada used to have budget surpluses and it resulted in trade surpluses too

When we went back into the red after recession to stimulate economy it resulted in a trade deficit as well. We stimulated the economy by putting money into it while manufacturing and exports struggled

The Government has been running deficits to stimulate economy and help consumers. Not surprising Canada's change into a budget deficit eventually turned into a trade deficit also!

oh I can't complain. Australia and Chile's steel industry will only benefit from him. Thanks America!

Spoiler

But don't underestimate him in these though. The US has still got a lot of bargaining power. I mean it is the biggest economy in the world atm, and China is still too sketchy for other Western countries (and the South American Southern Cone) to transparently trade with. And Europe is going nowhere, its production costs are too high compared to all the rest of all industrial nations.

It has bargaining power yes but it doesn't mean it won't still hurt itself
