I thought he'd probably just miss it. The Greatest Showman soundtrack is proving to be one of the most popular albums of the year already. And the cast just performed on Graham Norton, which means it's going to rise again in Justin's second week too. We have to remember that nothing from 20/20 Experience Part 2 even went top 20 in the UK. Both his 20/20 Experience albums only sold about 195,000 in the UK combined (with part 2 only selling about 60,000). So, we have to remember that his last album was an even bigger disappointing failure. A lot of people conveniently forget how badly Part 2 performed, probably because Not A Bad Thing managed to get top 10 in America and win a Grammy. He likely only got those amazing concert numbers because it was his big comeback to the public eye after 7 years and he had big nostalgic value. But now we're not as bothered because he's already done the big comeback thing, so it's nothing new (you'll notice that there's been no demand for any second dates on his European leg). Now it's just the way he releases music. He's become like Xtina - every album takes so long to make that it results in the ridiculous situation of having to make a "comeback" every time. It can work once. Twice if you're really pushing it. But if he takes one more hiatus, he's done.

And to everyone saying that Joanne went to #3, well, Gaga had a tougher week. She was releasing in October, which is when there's a lot of albums coming out and Christmas sales are starting to kick in of the biggest albums of the year and she was competing with the new Elvis Presley with The Royal Philarmonic collection Christmas edition (Elvis is still one of the UK's most popular artists and his first album released in the collection in 2015 sold over 1 million here) and the new Michael Buble album (he's still big here, even for a covers artist and he gets lots of UK promo around Christmas). Gaga had also had no UK promo at this time. She didn't doing any kind of UK promo until December. So, she charted as well as she could, considering all the competition. Gaga got 26k in her debut week with no promo, no top tens and her last UK top ten being 3 years prior despite 2 big pieces of competition. Justin got 19k in his first week with no promo, no top tens and his last UK top ten being 1.5 years ago (and being a massive hit, at that) despite a movie soundtrack a few weeks old being his only competition. I think Gaga won. He would've got lower than Gaga if they'd released at the same time. Remember that chart position can be irrelevant. It depends what was going on that week. If you release in the right week, you can get #1, if you choose the wrong week, you can be at #5. Even big artists like Beyonce and Rihanna failed to get #1 with successful albums due to a bad timing of release. It's the sales that matter, not the position.

Exactly, chart positions sometimes doesn't reflect actual success. I mean, the fact that Britney has 0 #1 albums in the UK, but 5 #2 albums, for example :emma:

The US sales have just been announced. He got #1 but only had 293k SPS with 242k pure sales. This is only 92k more than what Gaga opened with Joanne. And Joanne was released 3 months before the SB. You have to understand that Justin's debut US weeks have always been good. He got better sales with every release and 20/20 Experience Part 1 had 968k. That was just 5 years ago. Part 2, while garnering no hits at the time of its release, still managed to pull in 350k. So, this is really bad. It would be a bit more acceptable if he'd had no hits and promo whatsoever. But as it happens, Filthy and Say Something went to #9 respectively, he'd announced a whole bunch of US tour dates and he performed on the SB in the week of its release. There's no excuse for sales like that with all this going on. Looks like he's yet another one for whom the halftime show didn't help one iota.
